I think I'd still go with the book in the second scan though since it doesn't look like its missing a large piece of the cover like the first one is. Even though the first one looks like a better scan I think the second one looks like a better book... but who knows.

The staples on number look very weak (crushed).

I'd rather have a chip out than a cover that's coming off.

 

If the cover on 2 is still firmly attached then I'd take that one.

There seems to be a lot we can't see on the scans so I am a little less sure of these grades than normal

my sentiments exactly!! (1=3.0, 2=4.0). i think the brown spots on #2 are less offensive than that big chunk out of 1 and the crumbled lower right quarter. and the book appears in better shape all-around.
