BEST GOLDEN AGE PEDIGREE

23 posts in this topic

Hi Everyone,

Life long comic nerd but as i am a relatively young 32 and don't have much experience with golden age books (although they are all I'm interested in now), i was hoping to gain some knowledge from this board on what you guys would consider the top golden age pedigree collections, taking things like story, quality of books, and everything else I'm not experienced enough to know about lol.

Nicolas Cage collection for sure... :headbang:
cage isn't a pedigree collection..although there were pedigree books in his collection :)

Top pedigrees for me for GA would be Church, Larson, and San Fran (Reily)

..those...and Gaines File....

As some have stated the best pedigrees would be:

Mile High Pedigree (collected by Edgar Church): http://comicpedigrees.com/pedigrees.php#MILE_HIGH

Allentown Pedigree: http://comicpedigrees.com/pedigrees.php#ALLENTOWN

San Francisco (collected by Tom Reilly): http://comicpedigrees.com/pedigrees.php#SAN_FRANCISCO

Others to consider are:

Larson Pedigree (collected by Lamont Larson): http://comicpedigrees.com/pedigrees.php#LARSON

Lost Valley: http://comicpedigrees.com/pedigrees.php#LOST_VALLEY

If you are new to GA and want to buy pedigree books, give up on Larsons and San Frans, you just aren't going to find them for sale. You can find Church books in almost every decent GA auction thanks to Edgar buying a copy of nearly everything.

I'll also toss in Central Valley though the titles are mostly less popular. But you won't find those for sale very often either.

The best GA pedigree is, by far, the Edgar Church/Mile High collection.
Also the first named pedigree, I think. Dealers presumably bought collections from people during the 1960s but I don't recall an earlier collection with someone's name attached to it, although I may be forgetting something. hm

My top 3 - Chuch, Windy City, Larsen.

Windy City does not get the respect it deserves since it was broken up and dispersed so quickly. If you could have seen those thousands of first issues all in one place - and many of them unread - you'd all agree with me.

Interesting - I cant even recall the last time I saw a Windy City (Yankee Comics #1 maybe?)

as i recall, the "first" distinction goes to cosmic aeroplane.

church clearly the best. i like 'frisco second, and then, as a timely guy, i'm partial to the chicago books. then larson, then allentown, cuz tho' a small hoard, the percentage of great books in it is so, so high.

Might want to consider the Denver First as a top tier ped.

A relatively small grouping, but significant for the books it had. I am still kicking myself for not buying the Captain America 1 pre-CGC days. Only #1 issues, great climate so well preserved page quality.

Church/Mile High by far. Here's a link to Mile High's description of finding the collection. Great read.
