Complimentary copy

Just got a few books in today from late 1987 and several of them have "Complimentary Copy,NOT TO BE SOLD" stamped on the cover.They are all DC and Archie books so nothing special.

 

My question is how does this effect the grade.Assuming the book is around a VF/NM?

 

Can post scans but it may be a little later this evening.

Not at all, and I've found the stamp to actually be a selling incentive., especially on run of the mill titles.

I think it depends on who put the stamp on the book. If it was the publisher or the distributor, it may not hurt the value. However, if it was a third party, such as just one store owner, then I would think it would hurt the value.

Here are some examples of the books mentioned above.The archie & Me is pretty ugly and I can see it bringing the grade down.

Sent an ASM 122 to CGC a few months ago with "complimentary copy" stamp. It was not graded down for the stamp. I expected 9.2/9.4 and it got a blue label 9.4. I should note though that the stamp was not so large as your examples. Placement of the stamp was near the bottom of the FC

So various factors do need to be taken into consideration,i.e. size of stamp,placement and origin.

I'd ALMOST consider it a variant - thus, I MAY pay a little bit more. It's not high on my list though.
