Desktop Comicon? (3D Desktop Printing is here)

They've been around for a while now, particularly in the architectural and engineering industries. I first used one about five years ago to print a model of design we were proposing. It was truly amazing.

Imagine if you could use genetics and human tissue to print organs for transplant....

The more you read about the tech, the more it seems like a 1st gen Star Trek replicator. "Tea. Earl Grey, hot. Oh, and a Fender Stratocaster, circa 1972." :cool:lol

No one's mentioned "wiki weapon project" yet. Might as well toss that controversy into the discussion. Forbes article

Mainly a project/statement aimed at despots and dictators: you're no longer in control, you no longer understand the world you're living in.

“In a world where 3D printing becomes more ubiquitous and economical, defense systems and opposition to tyranny may be but a click away,”

It's like the opposite of Ray Bradbury's "A Piece of Wood".

Thoughts?

This thread makes me feel wonderful. I just worked for a 3D printing company called Stratasys and my position was just terminated.

Stratasys makes the 3D printing machines for manufacturing. The "home" machine is still far off. Yes, you can get a desk one now, but do you know how to use CAD? That's the only way you can upload the files to print.

Until CAD Design gets easier, it will be some time before you can start spitting out chairs and dinner plates.

Sorry to hear of your job loss. That's always rough.

Yeah, I don't imagine the tech will make everyone a designer. But I can imagine huge libraries of print quality files, similar to Word .doc, or PDF. The same way 3Dmax, Poser, and Zbrush users share 3D files now.

It's only a matter of time when I can chop of my hand and print a new one.

lol

Thinking about how early Guttenberg presses were used for porn, will there soon be a print-a-pornstar parts library? lollol

You just know that industry will find some use for 3D desktop, if they haven't already.

That definitely sounds better than chopping off my hand.

There's already a 3d printer for tissue and organs. Just not transplantable yet. http://www.organovo.com/products/novogen-mmx-bioprinter

Wow, that's amazing. :oTiny surface details are etched into the polyetherketoneketone to encourage the growth of cells and bone.

Here's another weird one:

Burlesque queen Dita Von Teese modeled a very revealing gown recently with a unique twist: It was printed rather than sewn.

I think my mind is officially blown, can't wrap my thoughts around this: 3D Desktop Printing. So I hope to read a good discussion.

Digital comics are here, that's a reality. But what about downloading shared files to print out statues, action figures, model kits, replica movie weapons, fantasy helmets or shields, character busts, playsets, scale space craft, practically any object you can imagine?

It's already here. Expensive, relatively. For now.

For someone who's comic book fandom included Aurora models, Super Sculpey, action figure and statue bashing... my mind vaporlocks with the enormity of desktop 3D printing.

Well, what's it mean for fandom in the (nearer than you think) future? (shrug) Thoughts? :wishluck:

(for extra future shock, look up "project wikigun". Just sayin')

It`s amazing, and why I asked people in the water cooler gold $500 thread a few months ago, as to what 3D printing companies I should look into for stock investment wise? If I am China I would be worried,as instead of American companies using China for cheap labor manufacturing the US companies could use the 3D printing technology instead.

3D printing will be a game changer just like cell phones were!

3D Print Your Own Invisibility Cloak at Home :o

Lawmakers just think they have a hard time keeping up with the internet. lol Looks like 3D printing tech is going to blow the doors off to ingenuity and innovation.

By the time they decide you being able to print something isn't cool, there'll be 100 more things they never even dreamed of. :ohnoez:

"Game changer" looks to be an understatement for this tech.

I agree, the possibilities with these replicators is endless :cloud9:
