2013 goals? How did you fare?

122 posts in this topic

So how did everyone go?

I failed miserably. I bid on lots of books on my list but didn't win anything or couldn't find books I would be happy with. Mostly because I have become disillusioned with bronze and PCH stuff is damn hard to find in grade.

I did however improve my grading skills and developed some rough quantitative tools to help me price books.

And it has been a great year, the drama and the continuing education I get from the boards is worth the price of admission.

The hunt continues. Here is to 2014 and more comics!

Complete a run of Miracleman 1-24 in yellow label. :(

Put together a Batman head sketch jam on a Batman 0 blank at the Boston con. :(

Add more sigs to some of the yellow labels I already have. :)

I did something unexpected this year: sold off most of my BA/SA collection to refinance our house, and earlier in the year I dumped all my sketch covers. I did pretty well, made money on my books - can't complain. I got a new focus going on (cheaper) 90's books, so that is fun. I managed to complete a really nice set of I, Lusiphur/Poison Elves I started a few months ago - so that was fun.

The only goal for 2014 I really have in mind is finding a set of Bone 1st prints that I feel is in my price range.

I think I did well. I wanted to get ten books for my X-Men run, and I purchased 19! I also stayed focused for the most part, which has been a challenge in the past with some many great books to purchase.

Gonna make my goals for 2014 soon, but they will be pretty similar.

2013 goals?

I scored, I got shut out, I went into overtime and lost.

I like it. No hat trick though buddy? :) Maybe next season. I'm sure you are getting another high draft pick. :foryou:

I would say that one of my pick ups of the year was the book you sold me Corgi. I really enjoy it.

More GL Signature Series A Denny/Neal double and a Denny/Grell double.

More Ladies in White, maybe even an upgrade or two.

One more SA key.

Grail: Gil Kane autographed Green Lantern comic (alas can never be SS) with decent provenance so I can feel relatively certain about its authenticity.

  • More GL Signatures? Check! (have you seen my sig line?)
  • Denny/Neal Double SS? Check! GL #90
  • Denny/Grell Double SS? Nope, a TRIPLE signed GL#100with Sauviek on top
  • More Ladies in White? Check! Some upgrades, and then I sold off the majority of the collection.
  • Gil Kane Grail? Check, and it even had decent provenance! Currently in Rich Henn's hands to try and get it signed by a slew of Green Lantern artists and SSed.
  • SA Key? Dont know if they are key keys but was happy to pick up a nice mid-grade SSWS84 (1st M.Marie) and a lowish grade Star Spangled Comics 122 (1st Dr. Thirteen)

2013 - put a decent dent in my new plan of a high grade Spider-woman run.

- get at least one Wonder woman book 1-10

- try and give something away in the pay it foreward thread

- go back to the store in I saw the 9.9 Secret Wars 8 and haggle my tuccus off.

- #2 in the registry baby!

- Fail :(

- PIF'd, Gave stuff away, donated to stuff! Take that OCD!!

- Alas, the pretty 9.9 was gone.....hadn't thought about that in a while.

Sell my current house

Buy a new house

Pay off $3,000 in credit card debt

Keep a job

Oh you mean comic related?

Get approximately 24 new SS books of artists I don't already have without breaking the bank.

Sold the old house

Bought a new house

Credit card debt didn't go so well

Kept my job :applause:

24 SS books of artists I didn't already have without breaking the bank didn't exactly happen (because of the additional CC debt but below are the new additions)

1. Cyber Force 1 Kickstarter SS - Marc Silvestri

2. Escape from Wonderland SS - Mike DeBalfo

3. Gen 13 1 SS - J. Scott Campbell

4. Teen Titans 37 - Gene Colan & Nick Cardy

5. Vampirella 5 - Frank Frazetta

6. Wolverine Origins - Michael Turner

7. Wonder Woman 16 sketch! - Jose Delbo

8. Wonder Woman 16 sketch! - Adam Hughes & Allisohn Sohn

Most of the year went towards celebrity SS

1. Buffy Season 8 SS - Eliza Dushku

2. Hacktivist SS - Alyssa Milano

3. MacGyver SS - Richard Dean Anderson

4. Stargate SS - added Christopher Judge to my Richard Dean Anderson/Amanda Tapping book

5. Mad Magazine - Lee Majors & Lindsay Wagner

6. Return of the Jedi - Billy Dee Williams

7. Six Million Dollar Man - Lee Majors

8. Star Trek Year Four - William Shatner

9. Star Trek - Zachary Quinto & Urban

10. Superman Batman - Laura Vandervoot

11. Walking Dead 7 - Andrew Lincoln

12. Walking Dead WW1ST Louis - Andrew Lincoln & Chandler Riggs

The year isn't over, but I'm seriously tapped out  4 books off of goal I feel pretty good.

Next year will probably be about the same, maybe a 50/50 split between celebrity and artist. I got some big ones off my list this year so I'm thinking the numbers will shrink so I can recover a bit. Probably 6 of each and work more on the credit card debt since all the moving is finally out of the way.

Ive obtained some nice books over that past few years only to flip, lose interest or whatever, hard to call myself a collector. Maybe a short term collector, but far from one who burries a book away from the rest of the world. Well I'd like to try and land a copy of Punch 12 in a unrestored state and possibly keep it and go from there and begin to "collect" comic books. Its a tough one to land, but I'm in no rush to become a collector.

I got a Batman 5, so I did meet that goal. I also got a couple of classic pre-code horror books(Weird Mysteries 4 and 5), but I've changed my collecting focus, so I sold them already. I got a Blue Beetle 1 with a Lou Fine cover. So I guess I did alright.
