ASM 300 blows as a cover. I remember getting it in my monthly shipment and thinking, "This is it?!?" :P

Agree. No drama, no pathos, no "what could this story possibly contain?"

Just a stylised Spider-Man with no conflict at all.

As an example, here's another favourite cover of mine (and one of Stan Lee's favourite stories, according to Stan)

No overt "battling", just a very powerful image, aided by background and a title.

Superman 14 - the sine qua non of comic book imagery

Hulk Annual 1 - Steranko, amazing color scheme

ASM 28: wonderful use of light and shadow

Detective 31: emblematic of The Dark Knight

WSF 29: Frazetta masterpiece especially the earlier press run copies

then, in no particular order: Hit 5, Mad 16, Space Western 44, Batman 17, WSF 29, Master 38 from the GA; Cap 110 and 111, Batman 227, XMen 50 and 56, Shield 4 from the SA; GL 76, Superman 233, Captain Marvel 31 from the BA. Agree with prior poster's nomination of Walking Dead 9 from modern books, might include a Chaykin American Flagg cover. I've specifically excluded homage-type covers, though I love them.
