Based on this thread, we're talking about actors' performances which defined the roles to the extent that anyone else will be compared as either sticking too close to the definitive performance or straying too far from it.

John McClane

Indiana Jones

 

Studios will remake/continue these movies, probably sooner than we wish, and we will wish for the original actors back.

The original Rocky has always been one of my favorite movies, and it had tremendous casting up-and-down. No matter what character he was playing afterward, every time I saw Carl Weathers I saw Apollo Creed (who was essentially the fictional essence of Muhammad Ali).
