I officiallly give up trying to obtain a copy of this book. To bid 1550.00 and lose is ridiculous.

One more bid :baiting:

Actually a nice looking 5.5

My exact thoughts when I click on the auction. Still, 5 bidders @ $1,000, no?

I imagine the very strong eye-appeal and page quality pushed the bidding higher. perhaps a case of bidders wanting to buy the book, not the label. Me, I'm just waiting for the Venus Vol.2 Masterworks

Strange book. Looks way nicer than a 5.5.

Seems to be a stain/liquid mark on the top left back cover.

And another stain on the shoulder of the leftmost Grim Reaper, front cover.

That probably knocked the grade way down.

That's what I was thinking. Technically the grade is probably spot on, but it shows way nicer.

Dang. That issue has blown the hell up. I paid a good amount for my copy a few years ago, (mine is the same grade) but not anywhere near that price. Their copy is nicer though. Sweet 5.5.

Even classic covers like that one in the pre-code pantheon were static for a long period. I remember an 8.0 copy of that book being offered on this board for around $750, not that long ago.

I wonder what has changed. Do you think this board has played a role? The Walking Dead phenomenon maybe? Collectors expanding/priced out of traditional superhero gold/silver age collecting?

It might be a bit of a stretch to say this board has had that much influence, but then in the last couple of years the traffic to this site has increased dramatically - who knows how many lurkers are out there, especially in this section, with the breadth and depth of knowledge on offer?

I'd say that it's a combination of the big GA and SA keys getting out of reach for most collectors, the influx of new money into the hobby (c.f. the last Clink and CC auctions) and the probability that such books are now flavor of the month.

The WD collectors who were brought into the hobby solely due to that title may not be ready to discover the merits of pre-code Heath and Everett just yet, but it's not out of the question that that book has played its part in bringing horror back to center stage.

I'm hoping you're right about the flavor-of-the-month syndrome, Andy. I've been feeling the same way, and as a result sold off most of remaining PCH classic covers--in the hopes that I'll be able to buy my favorites back post-market correction. A gamble, admittedly. But prices seem too high to be sustainable, i feel.

That is my concern too, but the market never fails to surprise me. What was once the ceiling becomes the floor in terms of prices, as you know. Look at the differences just between 2009 and now.

I hope that prices cease to increase at such pace (I hesitate to use the word "skyrocket") as after all those years of bidding within my comfort zone regarding such books, they're now getting out of reach. Such a correction has happened before, but that may not mean as much - it's not been that long since Heritage / Clink / CC assumed dominance of this part of the market.
