Best comic convention?

35 posts in this topic

Hey Guys

I might be heading to the states next year with the GF and we would like to plan the trip around one or two comic conventions. Any suggestions on the best ones?

I am not that interested in all the new media stuff my main concern would be Buying/oogling BA, SA, and GA.

The city the event is held in is also a big deciding factor.

Thoughts appreciated

Sincerely

Jake

My vote is for NYC. Perhaps not the largest convention - but it's a great size and you get to see the city while you're there. However - I was there in 2009, and there was a lot of new media stuff, so probably even more nowadays.

But you can't beat NYC.

I second NYCC especially if you have never been to NY.

Also good are ECCC and C2E2. Obviously there are other good cons but these would be really great cons that are in some awesome American cities.

A lot of people says you should see SDCC at least once but that is a load, it hasn't been worth the trouble or money since 2007.

Less comic vendors go because the cost to attend is ramping up. Corporate marketing has taken over SDCC

Wizard World Chicago

Central to the country, so it's within striking range of lots of friends, always an excellent variety of dealers, many MANY hotels within striking range, several of them actually connected to the convention center, and a world class steak house across the street. Oh, and a casino within a mile or so of the con center to boot.

Big enough that unless you have a short wantlist you can't look at every book, but small enough that it's not three miles from "You Are Here" to that panel you want to attend.

And they serve drinks at the con, so a toddy or two for those sore feet goes down smooth around 3 or 4 PM, lol

And two years running a couple years back, I Pricelined up a hotel room for $49. Split two ways that's under $25 a day for a NICE hotel room.

I've been to all of them. The best pure comic show in the United States is Baltimore. There's nothing else that comes even close. Wizard Chicago is a great show, but there's way too much WizardCrap to put up with.

Yeah, Donut's not wrong, there are a fair percentage of dealers selling swords, or tee shirts, or that sort of thing, but the number of comic dealers is still up there. Besides, it's hard to fault a booth just chock full of Toon Tumblers, lol

While SDCC is still great, I think the media end of things have taken over in some ways. There was a 10 year gap for me between my first trip in 94' and my last trip in 04', and it seemed like a different con all together.

If you are looking to see some historical sights, go to Baltimore, which gives you such great access to DC, and is known to be one of the last pure COMIC conventions.

If you don't mind putting up with the Wizard nonsense, but still want a con with lots of books, try Chicago. It's also the place where you can take a cab to Rush Street at 3 am and not be able to find a parking spot. Generally regarded as the favorite city to visit by professional athletes because it's such a party.

Just a fun city to spend time in.

I've not hit the NYCC, but that would be an option as well. Can't beat NYC. Even with the revamped Times Square, it still a fun town.

I went to NYCC last year and while there was a ton of new media, the comics were still represented proper.

There's a lot of great cities in America, each with its own vibe and culture, but you can't beat NYC.

NYCC is a juggernaut. There's miles of new media stuff ... and still room for enough comics (quater bins to multiple Action 1s) to wear you out and empty your pockets.

O yeah, and the "Artists Alley" like doubles in size every year. It was a huge airplane hangar last year, with major talent in every row.

2nd O yeah: There's also the other floors, with tons of panels and whatnot. It's impossible to cover everything, even with a four day pass.

Thanks speedy! We will definitely be going to NYC so I think we might go at the time of the con.

I haven't seen you on the boards much lately. Where have you been?

The significant other doesn't need much convincing she wants to go to a con! Which is surprising because she doesn’t like fiction!
