Sometimes, even I get surprised...

Looks like someone hit an insane BIN. Do you know the high bidder?

He's not an vocal member of the 'community' at ValiantComics.com,

though I'm sure he's a regular visitor of the messageboards, price guide, etc.

He has been buying Valiants (both CGC graded and raw) since about March/April,

in some cases setting the "record prices" for both raw and CGC graded issues.

His access to funds is far beyond anything my checkbook could handle...

For this book, raw average price has been about $150 ($100-$200)...

a CGC 9.4 sold a couple months ago for $210...

So, arguably... the 9.8 price is RELATIVELY normal... at 7.5 times CGC 9.4 price.

But... there's something about seeing it "for real" that is unnerving.

For the record, this book averaged $95 "raw" on Ebay in 2003...

Meanwhile, Overstreet lists it for a cool $5. grin.gif (Albedo #2, anyone?)

Interesting, what do you put the surge in Valiant CGC prices down to this year? Do you think the pricing/analysis on your own website has had anything to do with it? confused-smiley-013.gif

There have been about 3 to 5 deep-pocketed collectors who

have found themselves in bidding wars a couple of times...

It's not really a problem when books are regularly seen on Ebay...

like CGC 9.8 Harbinger 0 Pink... prices fluctuate, but they are relatively stable.

The surge occurs when the first copy of a book (in a high grade like 9.8)

is sold on Ebay... for other publishers and eras, the "first high grade copy" was

probably identified and sold in 2002... but for Valiant, it seems that 2004 is the year.

It's not really surprising that Valiant is "behind the times" for CGC grading...

the books are modern, predominantly low priced, and not from a major publisher.

Minor books & independents are like the 'final frontier' for CGC submissions...

since everything "more important" has been top priority since CGC started in 2000.

I predict that the end of 2004 and most of 2005 could see a sharp downturn in prices,

compared to the record highs we've seen for CGC Valiant books so far.

The books ARE out there... and it's only just a matter of time

before they're submitted (in larger quantities) to CGC and sold on Ebay...

There were just over 800 CGC graded Valiant books total in January 2004.

For August 24th, the census shows 2,300...

This is clear evidence to me that "scarce in CGC high grade" is only a temporary label.

It's dangerous to add a zero to the price because the book is hard to find right now.

It might not be that hard to find later.

Valiant collectors don't universally embrace CGC...

Several have said they won't pay even $20 for a CGC graded book,

when they can still buy raw books for $2 each.

When it's 10 raw books vs. 1 graded book... they'll take 10 raw books every time.

So an already small market, Valiant collectors, is even smaller when

you count how many are active CGC Valiant collectors.

Here's a chart for Harbinger #0 Pink in CGC 9.8...

There have been 25 sales of this book... so it has a more mature market

than the CGC 9.8 $1,500 Chaos Effect Alpha Red, or CGC 9.8 $970 Harbinger #1.

Looks like a sharp decrease is to be expected following initial high prices.

Eventually, things settle a bit, but there can be some regretable purchases along the way.

The book is the first part of the Chaos Effect storyline...

Basically it was a 1994 attempt to "relive" the 1992 Unity storyline glory.

A time-traveller opens a portal over a monastery in Tibet in 1994...

the portal is connected between 1994 and the traveller's previous 'location',

which is the end of time. The open portal is allowing energy from the end of time

to seep into 1994, which will eventually destroy the Earth and everyone on it...

not to mention the universe itself. So the Valiant heroes have to band together

to save the universe. Again. grin.gif

Many Valiant collectors tell how they stopped collecting around the time of the Chaos Effect.

This book is the rarer "Red cover" version of Chaos Effect Alpha.

The "Blue cover" version is fairly common and worth about $2.

So logically the red version is worth $1498 more. foreheadslap.gif
