Wouldn’t it also be cool to list the monster comics in chronological order, if possible.  Grand Comics Database doesn’t say what week the issue came out so I’m not sure how the ordering could be done reliably.

Not quite a list - more of a chronological spreadsheet

The Yogi in #14 is like an ancient one prototype

Wouldn't disagree there.

The word "prototype" is used a lot in the PHM era (a little too much for me). I think of it more as an evolutionary step as Stan, Jack & Steve were beginning to formulate the successful characteristics that would spawn the upcoming superhero explosion. You could say that many of the PHM monsters were Hulk prototypes (big muscular monster smash puny humans!). We had several lumpy orange monsters before the Thing arrived in FF1. Plenty of dudes in weird headgear and masks, are they all Iron Man or Dr. Doom prototypes or just good early ideas whose potential was fully realized later on?

Going back a little farther to 12/56, Yellow Claw #2 featured a Kirby story where "mutants" provided the Yellow Claw "awesome powers" - is this a mutant "prototype" or just a good early idea that Jack & Stan would revive when they were ready?

(The flying dog is my favorite part of this surreal scene. The bending buildings remind me of the Dr. Strange movie effects.)

Plus, pretty much everyone re-uses good ideas & styles - comic writers & artists aren't any exception!

My copy has a subscription crease and needs a good pressing.  I just sent in #3 yesterday into CGC to get graded.  I didn’t get that one pressed however.  I was being a cheapskate.

As an off-topic: I really liked this series and Black Knight - old crappy picture of my YC set:

Hey bc, you really need to start “The Lumpy Orange Guy” thread.  Also too, please save me from the weed.

Strange Tales #094.jpg

Send your weed over - I'll add it to mine. That's the only way to be saved (:

If we wanted to create our own PHM JIM subset - where should we start? hm

#49 - (11/58) First issue after the implosion. No Kirby or Ditko art. Likely a lot of leftover pre-Implosion content. Cover more indicative of post code than PHM.

#50 - (1/59) Has a 5 page Ditko story. No Kirby art. Possibly some content is leftover pre-Implosion. Cover more indicative of post code than PHM (but so were the early TOS & TTA issues that were out at the same time).

#51 - (3/59) Kirby & Ditko both contribute to interior art. Cover more indicative of post code than PHM (but so were the early TOS & TTA issues that were out at the same time).

#52 - (5/59) Kirby cover. Kirby & Ditko both contribute to interior art. Cover more indicative of post code than PHM (but so were the early TOS & TTA issues that were out at the same time).

#53 - (7/59) Kirby cover. Ditko contributes to interior art. Cover more indicative of post code than PHM (but so were the early TOS & TTA issues that were out at the same time).

#54 - (9/59) Kirby cover. Kirby & Ditko both contribute to interior art. Cover has classic PHM traits: Big monster name, fleeing humans, destruction of property, etc.

As a comparison, the Strange Tales PHM set starts at #67 (2/59) which only sports Kirby & Ditko interior art. ST #68 has a Kirby cover and both Kirby & Ditko interior art. It wasn't until ST #70 that we get the PHM cover style attributes as well. Applying the same criteria to JIM, #51 would be it's equivalent.

What do you guys think?

ps - big thanks to comics.org for the handy info :headbang:

GREAT question bc! I've always thought of 52 & 53 to be a part of the early pre-hero era for sure. I've never owned a 51. If it was decided that 51 was the 1st issue, I'd be ok with that, but 52 HAS to be included by my estimation of criteria. Bottom line, whatever is selected can't have an Atlas globe on it!  lol

So we have kirbyjack going with 50, you say at least 52.

Another fun fact about 50 - it's the first issue after the "start" - only one month after Strange Worlds 1 and tied with TOS & TTA 1.

Anyone else? I'll run with whatever the team decides.
