Would someone please fill me in on how Donna Troy died, and in what comics this storyline appeared?

I believe it was the Graduation Day story line. It was a 3 issue story that came out just prior to when the New Teen Titans series started.

 

All I can remember is that she isn't really dead. Sorry, but I can't recall the details.

Donna Troy: What a continuity mess

 

I know John Byrne tried to clean some of this up, but he just made it worse. Sounds like in the end it was a mercy killing (TT/Young Justice #3 according to the above site). Maybe Geoff Johns can fix this one too after he's done with Hal Jordan?

Artist Phil Jimenez has made it his personal crusade to get Donna back... I hear that if all goes well this will be sometime next year.

There are hints of it in the current Teen Titans storyline, everytime Wonder Girl gets these visons of Ares in the middle of battle or conversation with other Titans, he keeps alluding to some destiny for her and in this latest vision, there is a glimpse of Donna Troy, so I've already committed to her return as a given... maybe she's behind Identity Crisis?

TT did indeed replace Young Justice, but I don't know if the Graduation Day books are expensive?

Donna Troy is codenamed Troia, so no worries. Cassie will remain as the new Wonder Girl.
