The Copper 100: The Most Important Marvel Comics (1984-1991)

192 posts in this topic

Carnage was removed because it came out too late. The others were removed when I got rid of variants. We'll see what happens with the updated list.

Very useful threads thanks. Would appreciate a similar thread for the other CA publishers.

Independents are going to require a top 200-300 potentially. But well worth it.

I've started a list for the non-Big Two publishers, but it's almost unwieldy. I'll post my thoughts on it once I nail down the DC and Marvel ones.

Glad the list is proving beneficial. It's certainly proving to be beneficial to me, too. I'm totally in list creation mode.

Okay, here's what I've done. I realized that no one can agree on when the Copper Age starts, and because 1984 seems like a completely arbitrary date to start a list like this, I've decided to do this by decade. So here's the first draft of a top 100 Marvel comics from the '80s (look for the '90s list after we nail down this one).

For this first draft, all I've done is A) Remove those titles from the previous list that had a cover date of January 1990 or later, and B) Add key issues that I knew off the top of my head.

So, what am I missing? I added some key issues, but I know I missed just as many. And what about great stories that might not be "key issues" per se? I think the early '80s were great X-Men stories, but I don't want to add only UXM issues, but if that's what you have, give 'em to me.

I'm sure there are more issues to add from 1980 to 1983, and it should be relatively easy to eliminate other issues (such as DD 257 or FF 286), so let's add before we start taking away...

Remember, this list should be a summary of must own '80s books, so not just keys, but also great reads that symbolize the era.

Italics indicate issues I've added since the last update...

I agree with the two above me, UXM 141 and 142 should be there. Also, you have UXM 129 on twice, just need to change # 86 to UXM 130 for the first Dazzler.

Since FF 286 makes the list for the creation of X-Factor, would Avengers 263 belong on this list for the discovery of Jean Grey at the bottom of the ocean? The progression is Avengers 263 where Jean is discovered, then FF 286 where she wakes up and figures out she's been in a retcon coma, and then X-Factor 1 in which the rest of the O5 find out she's alive and form the new team. Ok, I'm wordy! Just saying if FF 286 belongs, then Avengers 263 does too. :)

+ 1 They tie the room together when it comes to X-Factor.

So I'm not even sure FF 286 deserves to be on here. Is that a major enough story? It certainly isn't "key" enough.

To get this down to 100, it'd be a lot easier to make it Marvel Universe only and rid the list of GI Joe, Star Wars, and 'Nam. But would any Marvel 80s list be complete without those?

The first IM 282 should've been 169. Fixed now.

I'm torn on Spectacular Spider-Man with the black costume. It's, what, the third appearance? Feels like a "whatever" kinda moment.

I took off Transformers, but now that I think about it, I can't remember why. Probably just to make room, which I need to do again, obviously, to get it down to 100.
