Comics new and old...

Its been awhile since I wrote a journal so I figured Id share what is and isnt on my reading agenda...both new books and old. I would love to hear what others think of these and find out what you all are reading as well. Be warned, I do talk about the storylines in these books so if you havent read them but plan on doing so then you may want to skip my opinion on that particular book.

Cable and XForce 12

Im on issue 11 now and I really enjoy this series. Im a Cable and Colossus fan and there are some intriguing relationships with Domino. I started this one late and had a heck of a time going back and finding some of the earlier issues without overpaying. I love Laroccas art too.

Hunger 2

I havent read issue 1 yet, but this is the one with Galactus...nuff said. The Silver Surfer, starting with issue 14 I believe from 1987, is the first series I ever collected so I will always have an affinity for the character. I cant believe no one has ever asked me this, but Im going to let you all know anyway...my member name, surfer99, comes from the Surfer and the year I first joined eBay. Theres your fun fact for the day. I was so crushed when that series ended, you have no idea. All attempts to bring it back have failed as well...I was screaming at Marvel that the reason the series keeps tanking is because they dont give it the right artist and writer combo.

All New Xmen 15

Im on issue 14 and I would have to say this is my favorite current series. Bendis is an amazing writer and Immonen is a talent. I got excited when I saw the name Campbell on the cover of this issue thinking it was J Scott Campbell, but no such luck.

Avengers 17

Im on issue 16 now. The jury is still out for me on this series. Im not really digging the whole lets make the Earth sentient and have it develop an immunity system to attack our heroes thing. I dont get the new life forms being created either. If the Earth became sentient and battled Ego, now that would be a good comic. Im sticking with the series for now just because Im an Avengers fan.

New Avengers 8

I havent really liked the series up to this point...when it comes to alternate universe storylines I usually pass. Thats why I didnt really care for Age of Ultron either. The only exception to this was Days of Future Past...that was amazing. Age of Apocalypse was pretty good back in the day too I guess.

Xmen Legacy 14

Im not a huge fan of the art, and I really could have done without the Red Skull with the brain of Professor X storyline, but Legion is just too much fun to put the book down. He is a great character and Im happy to see what theyre doing with him.

Uncanny Xmen 9

No matter how hard I try I just cant feel good about these characters, especially Cyclops after he took out Professor X. Dazzler joining SHIELD was brilliant though so Im hoping the stories get better from here.

Uncanny Avengers 10

This is probably my second favorite new series. I love the mix of Avengers and Xmen, Havok and Cap kind of coleading the team, the drama between Rogue and Wanda, the constant tension between human and mutant, all of it good stuff. Best move ever was bringing Sunfire on board...now Im going back and trying to find his previous appearances to see what he has been up to until now. Thats why I recently picked up Rogue 7 thru 12 from Mile High...another really good story.

Charismagic 3

The first series was great, and the second series is proving to be entertaining as well. I dont usually buy books that arent Marvel, but Aspen is the one exception. Recommended.

Legend of the Shadow Clan 5

I like ninjas and the story and art are really good. Think everyday family who finds out they have amazing ninja abilities, then theyre hunted down by the Hand who wants them dead.

Marvel Graphic Novel 4

First appearance of New Mutants. I was outbid on this issue twice in the last month. Found a decent copy at my LCS today for less than half the price. Nice. I also picked up New Mutants 1 through 4 since I already have issues 5 through 26 thanks to Tnerb.

Other Silver and Bronze Age books Ive purchased in the last few weeks that I havent got around to reading yet...

Daredevil 77

Spiderman and Sub Mariner appearances, part 1 of 2.

Sub Mariner 40

Spiderman and appearance, part 2 of 2.

Tales to Astonish 68

Giant Man, Hulk

Hulk 128

Avengers appearance

Strange Tales 121

Human Torch battles Plantman...I remember him from an early issue of Xmen so I had to see him up against the Torch.

Til next time...

Forgot to mention...Wolverine and the Xmen. I gave up on that series and sold issues 1-28. Made a nice profit that Im using to purchase another Bronze Age X-men appearance though, so that's good!

Surfer, it has been awhile hasn't it? Anyways as for me I have downloaded quite a few lately on my iPad in the past few weeks catching up on some. Even acquired a few new pages from the All New X-Men.

As for me,

All New X-Men has been a must for me. I do have to say the dramatic art shift was a little hard for me with this month's release. I guess I was so used to Immonen's art and even Marquez's that when they threw in Lafuente I was a little taken back by it.

Cable and X-Force has also made it to the top of my pull list be for me its more to see the Cable / Hope relationship and after reading this past week's one I have grown even more to love it. Really looking forward to this on almost a monthly basis.

Hunger was a little odd for me, with the Gal Ak Tus or whatever they call it in the Ultimate universe. I guess I'm a little interested in where they are going with this storyline and how it coincides with all the other changes in the Marvel universe and maybe in combining the Ultimate and 616.

All of the Avenger titles are hit and miss for me. The lead up to Infinity has been ok so far but having seen the Sentry's return in Uncanny A has been awesome. Really looking forward to where they go with this storyline.

As for Uncanny X-Men I personally have never been a fan of Bachalo's art style. Just wasn't my cup of tea. Always had that to cartoonish thing about it I guess. Really hoping they go somewhere with it but I will follow along as long as they keep Magik there and am really looking forward to seeing where they go with the Battle of the Atom storyline.

As for everything else I have been catching up on a few things here and there. Checked out DC's Blackest Night storyline and picked up a bunch of the New 52 Green Lanterns. Something about it just interested me I guess. I did pick up a few of the Wolverine and the X-Men's. I am really hoping they go somewhere with this one and really hoping they look more at this as a New Mutantish story rather than Wolverine centered with a couple kids here and there. Kinda wondering where all the other Generation Hope kids went since the AvX Storyline and how I think Idie in there seems to get younger and younger as they go... I guess after seeing the momentary premonition of seeing kid Genesis growing up and becoming Apocalypse and a Phoenix'ed Q in the early numbers have me leaving some ray of hope for this series...

Great to hear from you again.

Thanks for sharing K. Cool to hear a different perspective. I don't follow the Ultimate U and had no idea the Hunger series was related...kind of bummed about that as I stated Im not a fan of alternate U story lines. Oh well.

Looking forward to hearing more from you my friend.

Hey Surfer,

Good to see you back! After reading your journal and the response from K, I realized how out of touch I am with the new material.

I did happen to notice a series of graphic novels the other day at my LCS, Criminal. The covers caught my eye, specifically Criminal Vol. 4: Bad Night, the name Ed Brubaker was attached and looks very familiar, this might have to go on my reading agenda.

I'm working on re-reading Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, I've only read the first chapter, Giant Size X-Men 1. Thanks to some recent journals, I decided it was an appropriate time to to revisit this series.

I also plan on re-reading Stoker's Dracula, a fantastic black-and-white adaptation from Roy Thomas and Giordano of the original Dracula novel. This was started in the '70s as a back up feature to a Marvel mag but was never finished, the art sat in the vaults until the mid 2000s, Thomas and Giordano were able to finish the job! I like to dig this up every few years around Halloween.

Hey Brandon, thanks for writing. Sounds like you have some nice reading planned. You can never get enough of the classic Xmen run with the new team. I'm usually not a fan of the horror type books, but I may have to make a purchase in the near future...if I do I'll be sure to write about it.

Awesome journal. It is nice to see that I'm not the only one who actually buys new comics here.

Hunger has been really good especially the art. I've dabbled in the ultimate universe some. I only get Ultimate Spider-man now, but I used to get X-Men and some of the crossover stuff like Ultimatum and Hulk vs Wolverine.

All New X-Men is definitely my favorite ongoing right now. Bendis took what I thought was going to be a very stupid and typical time travel story and made it amazing.

With Avengers and New Avengers I've been digging New more so. For one following Hickman's story lines are pretty difficult and I find New easier to keep up with. But I do enjoy both books and am looking forward to Infinity tomorrow. Uncanny Avengers, which Remender has been doing an awesome job on is definitely my favorite Avengers book. I can't wait to see where it goes with the Apocalypse twins.

For those that don't know, Marvel is bringing back original graphic novels that are set in canon. Starting with an Avengers book next month I believe and a Spider-man book to follow in a few months.

As you can see by all the new stuff I get, which this is just a small percentage, that it does make it harder to get things graded and buy already graded issues. Either way though, I enjoy myself.
