Trading Post/PIF/Giving Tree Discussion Thread

2,657 posts in this topic

The butthurt is palpable. I need to hang out in the PIF thread more often. This is better than Sig Series butthurt. lol

I've never participated in the PIF, so my opinion (as usual) is worth virtually nothing. I will, however, say that the example that cgcjoe posted is hilarious and I can totally understand why some people would be pissed at people gaming the system. 2 pretty decent books offered and taken, quarter-bin fodder offered up to the next guy.

Out of curiosity, how many times have you participated in the PIF thread? I've seen plenty of quality offers stay on the table.

1) I read the PIF thread, but I don't participate due to the rampant junk donkeys.

2) Really? Do you have links to these "quality offers" that stayed unclaimed for 3 days?

I'm fine with people who don't participate discussing the PIF thread and concept, particularly here, in a thread designed specifically for that. But I don't understand why you and people like MagnusX read the PIF thread and post in it specifically just to call out people publicly and trash their offerings. I honestly just don't understand what you are trying to accomplish other than to derail the thread. It comes across to me like Statler and Waldorf dumping on people for your own amusement.

For 20 months, the PIF has managed to continue moving forward. Which means that somehow, despite all these "junk" offerings, someone has eventually claimed the books every time. I personally find the constant potshots being fired by outside observers to be much more destructive to the thread than anything being offered up or claimed by the people actually interested in participating in it. Why not just let the people who want to enjoy PIF enjoy it unmolested?

The only time that quarter bin junk is painfully underwhelming is when it posted after someone takes a generous offer.

Here's a tip for those members who claim they only have drek.....don't take fancy schmancy books and then offer your junk. Wait for an offer you feel is more appropriate in quality to what you have to offer up in return.

Let me tell you bout the story of the P-I-F thread

Such a sordid tale, it'll make you scratch your head

One day the junk donkeys were a tradin up some books

And they next they got some awful funny looks

Memes and stuff, donkey pics

Well the first thing you know, Mkkiller stiffed some dudes

And all the junk donkeys said it was really rude

They said "probation thread is the place you ought to be."

So they went to PL discussion and took it up with Speedy D.

Dan, that is, Brooklyn boy, Flash devotee.

Well, the next thing you know, PIF wasn't in the mix

And they needed a spot to torch the dudes who made bad picks

So they cranked up this thread and then they added Slym

And everyone is glad that its Slym instead of them.

In addition to exercising my sphincter, this post was helpful in summing up the situation.

Hasn't been mentioned yet, I'm not sure if it's the best idea, but maybe having the only rule about being able to play is 50 post minimum (and not be on HOS list) isn't enough of a pre-req. I mean, you aren't allowed to do secret santa unless you've been a member for a year.

Perhaps the easiest fix is just make it so not anyone can go post 50 posts in the grading forum and waltz in. Having been a forum member for a year even, doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Common Sense. :golfclap:

Too many gold-diggers offering gravel in return.

So you totally ignore the longtime PIF participants who have a problem with the current climate and bunch everyone into "non-participants" and "observers"?

The next time I argue the virtues of free market capitalism over socialism, I plan on simply letting my opponent read the PIF thread in its entireity.

False dichotomies up in this B.

[font:Book Antiqua]I believe the PIF thread is a good idea

I also believe that some people is taking advantage of the generosity of some members.

The continues drama that is the PIF is spilling over Comic General.

And when I see someone taking the first app of Master of Kung Fu

and Iron Fist and in return offer Wildcats # 1 I will point to it...

Also I believe there are some shill accounts in your community...

Once you start talking about commensurate values, the whole thing simply becomes a trading post, and the "spirit" of the thing is diminished. But if you don't talk about commensurate value to some extent, douchenozzles will take advantage.

This is why we can't have nice things.

C'mon, man, he's making an effort. What else do you want from the guy?

He's like a kid who only cleans his room after you ask him to about 100 times, then when finally does it, he's rude and expects a reward.

His first offer was an insult to PIF, and he deserved to be strung up an example of how not to "Pay it Forward".

lol

You still need to have limits though, and I think a "1 claim per month" and "6 months on the board" would go a long way to eliminating this behavior, as well as stopping the obvious shilling going on with new IDs.

This kind of commentary, from a known junk donkey, is not in line with PIF:

Cant wait till I can grab another offer :whee:

I think 1 claim per month is too long but the 7 days/24 hours might not be right either, that does create a lot of vultures (guilty). Maybe 14 days/3 days.

I do think there needs to be a larger wall in place than the current rule that if you have 50 posts you can jump in. 6 months sounds fine, 1 year seems fine too for that matter.

That sounds fair, and stuff like this has to keep evolving to meet the needs of the forum, otherwise the junk donkeys and shills will just take over.

"14 days immediate/3 days unclaimed + 6 months board time" sounds like proper limits without going too far and ticking off valid PIF new members.
