Just how many key words do you need to exlude to search for OA on ebay?

17 posts in this topic

Searching for, say, Kirby, you have to exclude: print, recreation, re-creation, homage, production, book, transparency, lithograph and about a hundred other words, along with the names of about a thousand people who list their own drawings based on Kirby. And, still, you will find the list is 90% things that are not actual Kirby art.

I know what you mean, there is a lot of clutter in the OA category.

However, I rarely exclude any words my searches, I just scan through the results for what I want. For example, if you exclude the words "print" and "lithograph" you could miss a listing if the seller was trying to sell the original art that was used for a print or lithograph. So I chose to scan everything so that I don't miss out on things like that, even though it means I have to go through a lot of clutter.

Finally, you probably won't be surprised that I am doing this, but do you exclude the word "stat"? I am selling the stat of the Kirby Hulk 1 cover that was used for a UK reprint

If you sort by price I'd bet that'd chuck most of the chaff to the bottom of the pile. If you check often enough. As always with Ebay you might have to act fast if you're worried about others contacting the seller to pull an auction down.

Checking often is the best thing anyway. The mobile app is great or this if you have a generic saved search you look at every other day that only shows newly listed. Even with all the chaff you only have a few to look at.

The only problem is you might accidentally exclude something you're looking for. "Kirby FF Silver Surfer page/sketch on back" would be missed. So would "Frazetta babe painting, original art not print or lithograph". I've seen lots of listings with similar wording.

Unfortunately to truly see everything you want to you have to look at a lot of things you don't want to.

As for blocking sellers, that would be great especially on CAF searches. Alas, this was mentioned to Bill in the early days and it didn't fit with his vision.

I asked Bill the same thing a couple of years ago when I joined CAF. And I get why he won't do it. That is part of his revenue stream, and if everyone blocked coollines, why would they give him $$ to support the site anymore?

To the topic at hand, I have a lot of filters, and that's because I'd rather save 100 hours miss 1 item, than waste all that time sifting through junk.

Everyone wishes they could block coollines :(

So who wants to build a browser plugin to do it? :)

Actually, I put a snipe bid on that, but it was just a bit short and someone else got it

Some of these are amusing. I, too, put "sexy" in my excluded list, as I found a lot of guys seemed to be selling their own porn doodles as comic book OA.

I actually don't mind true production art if it's vintage dates to the original print, but I put that in, too, because I can't take the time sorting out the modern items. The scammers in that field don't seem to call them "stats" anymore. Real production art belongs in a different category, such as memorabilia. Cool when vintage but not really art or a comic.

I also don't have a problem with "unused." I've ended up with some pretty amazing pieces that were unused versions and/or prelims to iconic covers and interior pages, at a cost that was a tiny fraction of what the final published art would cost (and even a small fraction of what it would cost to buy pieces by lesser artists on lesser titles, with nothing approaching the same iconicity (I just coined that)

Thanks for the snipe! As you can imagine, I am pleased. When I put it up for auction, I was hoping/expecting 1K+, but as the auction progressed, I was resigned to a ~$300 finish, but I'm glad my initial expectations were correct. :)

I don't mind "unused" either, but like production art, some people sell modern recreations of vintage covers as unused covers, so I watch out for that too.

I miss the days when the original art category consisted of 1 (or if it got crazy busy prior to con season, maybe 2 or 3) pages worth of stuff to sift through. You may think I am joking, but as I recall, I found some really amazing pieces in those days, despite the lack of early participation.

I miss the years of calling up advertisers in CBR to ask about art they had listed. I bought a Sandman cover that way for I believe it was $500. I miss places like 4 Color Gallery. I even dearly miss the old catalogs from dealers like Mitch, and even up until the Wildstorm art catalog years.

I miss a lot about those times. Mostly because it seemed like there were golden nuggets everywhere. Now it seems like the pie isn't all that much bigger, but everybody and their brother wants a slice, and is throwing crazy money to get one. We are largely down to the crumbs.

Sure, we didn't get listings sent straight to our phones, or flagged on upcoming items, or have all the bells and whistles. had to work a bit to find stuff, but the chase was great. The comradery was precious, and the scores were sweeter.
