Top 10 comics to read before you die

Funny seeing all the lists of the Ditko/Lee Spider-Man run. While I love the run, I really feel like the Romita/Lee run has aged so much better. I think the must read should run from 1-122 of Spidey. Then jump back in for the Hobgoblin arc.

Everything else has been mentioned in here already. I've even added some of this stuff to my Amazon wish list that keeps growing.

You know I think you are right that the Romia run is much more readable, the thing about the Ditko part of the run was the # of homeruns that Lee/Ditko hit in creating all of Spidey's enemies.

In 40 issues we got:

Doc Oc

Green Goblin

Samndman

The Lizard

Vulture

Mysterio

Electro

Kraven the Hunter

The Scorpion

and those are just the homeruns. Thats not even counting all of the non-villians that were created in Spidey's world.

Romita's run is far more readable, and brings Spidey from being super nerdy to more manageabley awkard.

I think the Romita run may have been more readible for several reasons:

1. Change in panel layout from Ditko's standard 9-grid page to a more varied approach by Romita

2. Less words. By the time Romita came onboard, the average word count per page/issue had decreased substantially from the initial Ditko issues and reading ASM required less time

3. Ditko's Spidey had a lot of teenage angst and yes, Peter was nerdy. By the time Romita came on board, Peter got a motorcycle, dated Gwen and MJ, moved in with Harry, got rid of his glasses and became handsome and chic-cool.

I start out with a diversification of series.

I liked Starlin's Warlock saga when I first read it 30 years ago, but to me, it doesn't hold up, much the same as the Adams GL/GA run. It feels kinda dated.

DD Born Again - I've always had difficulty understanding the appeal of this storyline, but for me, I couldn't get past the artwork. Like nails to a chalkboard (hey kids, remember chalkboards?)

Alan Moore - The Killing Joke is brilliant. Everything else I've read by him is meh.

Fantastic Four #232-293.

Byrne is a master storyteller.

Peace,

Chip

and that run is on my list +1.

Stormwatch vol 1 37-50

Stormwatch vol 2 complete

Stormwatch/Aliens one shot

The Authority vol 1 ( all time favorite )

Planetary - Warren Ellis had a fantastic run with all of the books.

Sin City by Miller

The Dark Knight Returns by Miller

The Watchmen by Moore

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Moore

Kingdom Come by Waid and Ross

JLA by Morrison

New X-Men by Morrison

Sandman by Gaiman

Hitman by Ennis

Amazing Spider-man the whole thing.

Batman Knightfall and Hush

Action 775 is my favorite Superman story.

I believe if the story holds together that East of West will join this list.

When I was younger and had a more forward looking outlook the list would be more like

Rom Spaceknight

X-men 94 up by Claremont

Avengers in the mid 100s through mid 200s

Conan by BWS

There is no way I could pin it down to 10. I'm leaving off 100 lol
