Pedigree Comics Sells Avengers #4 In 9.8 For Record Price Of $120,000!

BREAKING NEWS!! Pedigree Comic's President and CEO, Doug Schmell, has sold a CGC certified copy of Avengers #4 in 9.8 for a record price of $120,000. Featuring the first Silver Age appearance of Captain America as well as the fourth appearance of the Avengers, Avengers #4 is one of the more popular and valuable early Silver Age keys, sought after by both fans of the Avengers and Captain America.

Cover dated March, 1964, Avengers #4 has been a very hot book in ultra high grade over the past few years. The Ohio pedigree copy (9.6 with off-white pages) sold for $91,500 at auction in February, 2011. The only other 9.8 example to be offered for sale sold for $86,000 at auction in August, 2012. Pedigree Comics sold a 9.4 copy in April, 2011 for $30,000, a record price for a 9.4.

The book is characterized by unbelievable color strike, exact centering, tight and perfectly placed staples, razor sharp edges and corners, off-white to white pages and a remarkably white cover. The back cover is perfect and is unbelievably white. It is easily the nicest copy of this great issue we have ever seen and we have owned a few 9.6’s, including the Pacific Coast one. What sets it apart from the other high grade copies is the bottom left front cover edge, which usually displays wear and color flecking due to the dark black background. This copy has absolutely no wear whatsoever on any portion of the front or back cover and looks to be unread. It is one of only three (3) copies to make it to 9.8 (out of 1,999 copies submitted to the CGC as of this writing) and is truly deserving of the NM/M designation. We told the buyer he would be calling us as soon as he received it to rave about his new purchase and sure enough he did.

The buyer is a Silver Age collector who focuses on investment quality, ultra high grade keys. He primarily is interested in Marvels but does like the early Silver Age DC #1 and first appearance issues as well. He saw the book listed in the Auction Preview of our then-current Grand Auction (August 25 through September 4) and asked if he could purchase it outright prior to the auction commencement. After two days’ worth of negotiations, a price of $120,000 was agreed upon, on August 24th.

If you have any comic books to sell or consign, do yourself a favor and contact Pedigree Comics or check out our website at http://www.PedigreeComics.com. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, etc. about how to get the most amount of $$ for your treasured books, either by sale or consignment, please contact us at (561) 422-1120 or (561) 596-9111 or by email at DougSchmell@pedigreecomics.com. We have been involved in the sales of more high grade CGC graded Silver Age Marvel keys, either by purchase, brokerage or consignment, than any other dealer and we keep all calls and information confidential for your protection.

Consignors maximize their profits selling in our Grand Auctions, more so than on any other auction site or auction house. We do not charge a Buyers Premium, an amount that most bidders take into consideration when bidding in other sites (the bidders simply deduct that Buyers Premium amount from their final bidding price, meaning less $$ to the consignor and more to the auction site). The higher the value of your book(s) that sell in a Grand Auction, the more $$ you take home under Pedigree Comics’ Climbing Scale. We consistently set new sales records for Silver and Bronze Age comics in each Grand Auction and on our regular site inventory. Grand Auctions are unique and exciting, with new and diversified, top-rated CGC material in each event. Why settle for less by consigning with someone else?

Prospective consignors can also upload their own scans, item information, descriptions and reserve amounts for the upcoming November Grand Auction by utilizing the Automated Consignment System. It is actually very easy and fun to do. Just register onto the site, click "Customer Page" under "Your Account" and then click "Consignments" (under "Auctions"). You will then be able to enter the Pedigree Comics Consignment Management System and upload your own CGC certified books and magazines. We will receive an email notification automatically once you have uploaded the information and we will then review the information imparted for accuracy. The item(s) will then be added to the November Grand Auction to be bid on. You will be amazed how simple it is to utilize the Automated Consignment System.
