PGM ASM #298

6 posts in this topic

Here is my copy of ASM #298. There are issues with the edges at the top and side of the book that appear to be manufacturing related - improperly trimmed. Is this considered a publishing defect? How does it effect the grade on this particular age of book? There are no colour breaks in the spine although you are seeing very minute stress lines. (The scanner light creates the effect of colour break) There are no other hidden or visible defects that I can find. The book lies flat, the spine and staples are tight and the interior pages are white. Your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.

Wow, these scans are too large! :D

In my opinion, there isn’t an "improper trimming", the cut is just a bit raw in some points, but this not unusual. It seems to me there is a slight amount of what’s technically called "fanning" (and possibly a very light spine roll), but it is an awesome copy and I think it would not grade less than NM. But of course I’ll leave it to more expert people. :)

Hey, would you like to give me your opinion on the GA book I posted a few days ago? I realized the cover paper is bound to detach from the upper staple, and so I think a downgrade is in order as I have to sell it. Thanks! (thumbs u

I checked the book again for "fanning" and there is very slight fanning with the front of the book overlaying the back. There is however absolutely no spine roll. The book lays perfectly flat I'm glad to say. From the large scans you can see everything more clear. To the naked eye most of the improper trimming is unnoticeable. Thanks for you comments, they are always appreciated.

What GA book is it that you want me to review? I'll be happy to look at it!

Sorry, I meant a very very slight miswrap, not spine roll (english is not my language and often I use a term instead of another).

Yes, it is a gorgeous book and I think that minimal fanning would not impact the grade, at least up to a NM+ or so, so it’s surely a 9.4 possibly better but I think it’s hard to tell 9.6 and up from pictures.

The book is the Treasure Chest, the one with the anti-communist strory that you already graded. :) Thanks!

I don't think it has a spine roll, generally you'll see a rounding effect on the spine and the right edge would be affected more than what I see.

I would guess this is a 9.4, but I don't have much experience at the higher grades.
