I doubt Russ had much to do with the color choices on the covers, but the colors really make some of these stand out and others too subdued. No doubt the illustrations are all excellent, but some of them show that excellence better because of color schemes that complement them.
Very good point. I did not think to mentally disassociate the colorist's work when voting. Also, it seems that color preferences vary by individual, just as much as "art" preferences, some will like the monotone covers more, others the vibrant.

 

 

I would think (especially with the grey tone movement at DC) that the cover artists would be cognizent about the upcoming coloring of the book, and it could influence composition (greytones seem to work best on less busy pencils)

Yeah, I don't think the penciler and colorist worked in vacuums. I've seen plenty of OA with coloring notes on it.

Russ was allowed to color some of his covers for Atlas -- War 23, for example. His DC covers were handled by Adler or others in their color department.
