Preserving the History - Scan a Comic Book

69 posts in this topic

As I've gotten older, the history of comics means more to me than it once did. Occasionally, I'll visit a website that features a cover gallery. I'll see a really lousy scan of a comic. It'll be riddle with creases, it's low resolution, high compression, wrong color palette, chunks missing, etc. I had always assumed that people were too busy or preoccupied to post a better scan of some unpopular Charlton comic from 1963. I'm still pretty sure that's true. I guess what bothers me is that some of these scans are being shared by every single web site that features a cover gallery. Some of these forgotten comics simply aren't represented with any dignity on the web. It's like everyone is just copying the GCD's database and not really concerned about the quality of the archival record. It also makes me wonder if many of these comics are more rare than people realize. If they are more rare, I'm sure that would spike demand on some of them.

If you own a nice scan of a comic and every example you've seen online looks like garbage... post a scan here. I'd like to see the comic as it was intended to be seen.

I'm tired of looking at 300 different scans of Amazing Fantasy #15. I like to look at scans of comics that I saw on the spinner racks when I was 12 years old. They might not have been something I wanted to buy back then, but it gave the hobby balance. I like the fact Cheyenne Kid existed even though I was buying Hulk.

I love cover scans, and have amassed nearly 10,000 in about 5 years of being serious about it. I scan as many as I can myself, but also copy them from the web as long as they fit my specifications for quality. Doesn't matter if it is an uber key or a worthless copper book, I want a scan of it. This is the cheap way to collect everything, I figure. I'll post some next time I'm on my computer.

Scans of nice copies of this title are rarely posted on the web:

Love the Gorgo's! Of course, the Ditko covers on many of them are a pleasure to look at.

You always have great scans.

While I can't guarantee that you've not seen these scans previously, they're not widely posted on the net:

I'm still trying to upgrade my #13. Trying to find nice copies of the Fly from 1959-1962 is no easy task, let me tell you that!
