Comics, Pulps, and Paperbacks: Why such a discrepancy in values? 25 25

Another nice unread copy with a couple bumps. Really like the painted glossy covers that Avon and popular put out in the 40's and 50's:

In today, after @jimjum12 showed his copy a few days ago:

A few new acquisitions from a local bookstore.

First up a newer copy of .Dr. Futurity. (1972 ed.) with the flip side being 'The Unteleported Man'.

 

One more by PKD, 'Clans of The Alphane Moon' with a cover by Valigursky.

From 1955 'Man from Tomorrow'. The artist is unknown but an interesting composition nonetheless.

Lastly 'Men Against the Stars' (pub. 1950), a book with short stories about space exploration set sequentially in time proceeding from the most mundane to exploits of the far future. My favorite cover of these 4 books.

Some Print-run Fun

The Avon Merritt "Burn Witch Burn" trifecta.

Avon Murder Mystery Monthly No.5, Avon No. 43, Avon No. 392. Cover art by William Forrest

 

Inside No. 392, it gives the printing info that MMM No. 5 was printed in December 1942 with a 100,000 print run, No. 43 was January 1944 with a 100,000 print run, there was a second print run of No. 43 in April 1946 with a 50,000 print run (HRN probably around no. 80-100, I don't have one to compare, this one is the 1st print) and finally No. 392 in October 1951 with another 200,000 for a total of 450,000 copies

There was a hardcover version of this as well! Same cover, same size, same publisher (I think). No jacket. A little hard to get. Published simultaneously, I think.

Not sure if that's an arrival stamp or a "use by" date on that gal's panty hose ... It's well rendered, none the less. I've always been amazed at the detail in these paintings, despite the relatively small size of most of the originals I've seen. GOD BLESS ...

So, my local book store called me and told me he had gotten a box of (mostly) 50's paperbacks and comics, the paperbacks fairly decent and the comics ranging from "bits & pieces" up to about VG.  I wound up getting a bunch of books and comics for more than what he paid for the box, but better than I could have expected for the material in general.  We'll start with the Hammett.  The Pocket Red Harvest is a stated Pocket 3rd, the Reader's League has no printing info, and the Maltese Falcon is a stated Perma Books 1st.
