Why is Amazing Spider-man 300 going for so much?

149 posts in this topic

It's only the original cover, the variant cover doesn't sell for near as much

There are no ASM 300 variants, only reprints that were produced a decade later.

Definitely adds to the strong demand....Like Walking Dead 1 and Saga 1 (RRP excluded)

I was looking on EBAY and saw a few listed over $700

that seems like a crazy asking price

I get it's the 1st full app of Venom and he's one of the most popular spider-man villains, but there are a ton of high grade copies. Just a few months ago a 9.8 would cost around $300. Now a 9.8 could cost $700+

I don't get why 9.8s are going for over $600

It's only the original cover, the variant cover doesn't sell for near as much

At this point my only chance of getting a 9.8 would be to get a high grade raw copy and hope it hits the 9.8 mark

I wonder if Amazing Spider-man 361 will ever hit that point.

WHEN WHERE THEY $300 FOR A 9.8? I agree that its a high priced book but prices are not really that much higher than the last 2 years. You can get a better price on some of the other comic sites as opposed to Fee-Bay.

In December 1998, Marvel released a reprint of ASM #300 with a 'Chromium' cover in the Marvel Collectible Classics series:

Amazing Spider-Man 300 Marvel Collectible Classics (1998)

This appears to have become more collectable than the original with high grade prices well over $500 (not surprising given that the print run was only around 3,300). Some people like the reprint because of the low print run ...To me it's a reprint.

GPA: last 2 years. AMS #300 9.8

Must have been in 2010-11 that I was really looking for a copy

I wasn't saying it was the average I was just saying I used to see a few at that price. I've passed up a few super nice raw copies of AS 300. Seems like most super nice raw copies i've seen go for around $150

I know I saw a few for less than $400, not many but a few. Like I said it must have been a few years ago. I haven't tried buying a copy recently

I've been looking for a 9.6 white pager. The asking price on ebay for a 9.6 has been over $400 the past couple months. This books really shot through the roof lately... It could at least have waited until I got a nice copy. $400 for a 9.6 is nuts but seems to be the going rate...?

They were selling in 9.6 for around $150-$175 on here a few years ago. But then again, Batman Adventures 12 CGC 9.8 was selling for under $100 for a few years ago on here. Try and find that price now.

:ohnoez:

I'm not a big batman/DC fan, but I've noticed a lot of people talking about Batman adventures #12. What's key about that book?

It's got a groovy Batgirl cover. I think the real draw is that it's got special ink in the book that I think will probably be legalized in CO. (thumbs u .

Just a few months ago a 9.8 would cost around $300. Now a 9.8 could cost $700+

WHEN WHERE THEY $300 FOR A 9.8?

Maybe you're remembering auctions that hadn't finished yet.

According to GPA, a CGC 9.8 hasn't sold for $300 since 2003.

A single sale in 2010 was $324 and it occurred between sales of $500 and $535, so that $324 was likely something fishy... like a seller with no feedback, or 50% positive, or they spelled it "Sipderman" or something.

Between 2003 and 2014, you would have to spend at least $450, if not $500, to get a bargain CGC 9.8... and that's if you watched every sale for a decade.

Out of 7013 universal subs, 6% have come back 9.8. But of that 6%, someone already alluded to in this thread, there are several visual flaws with these issues; the main one including a glaring right side jagged edge that either runs down 1/3, 2/3, or the entire right side front cover. For some reason this seems to be prevalent with several of the yellow labels 9.8's I have vetted for purchase recently. I have not been paying close enough attention to the blue labels. Anyone with insight, please share.

Most of the recent 9.8's I've seen have some of this jagged edge problem. Years ago, it was difficult to obtain 9.8's with the bad edge, as one of the main graders actually came on here and said 9.6 was probably going to be the highest grade you could get with this. They must have relaxed on this policy due to the fact most copies I've seen have this problem. Bindery flaws, as well. You'll probably see more 9.8's with the bad edge, then not. All 9.8's are not created equal. It's one of the main reasons this book will remain high in price. That, and it being THE copper book to own, with apologies to TMNT 1.

If they go the route of Oscorp, Peter's dad helping to create the Venom suit, etc., do you think there is potential for growth on Ultimate Spidey #33?

I know that is a modern, but wanted to hear your opinions on it.

What the what?? Am I missing something here? Venom was the symbiote discovered in Secret Wars and then later rejected by Peter Parker.

I hate to say it, but this is sounding like Harbinger 1 CGC 9.8s. Some feel the only real 9.8s were identified in the early days of CGC, and later books are getting a pass on known minor flaws associated with this book.

I've had a few come back from CGC, and my 9.8 is a solid 9.8 and my two 9.6s are very much reasonable as each had a tiny spine stress line that would keep them from the 9.8 grade. It was just a long time before I got around to submitting them.

I can see the same thing with ASM 300, as this was a popular book early on and considered collectible quite rapidly. Now it is just taking years for some to come out of collections and into CGC's loving hands and into warm, cozy plastic beds before being woken up by being cracked out and resubmitted for the next grade bump or Stan Lee/Todd McFarlane signature.

I don't own a copy of #300 at thye moment but the last 9.8 copy I had, had the "jagged" right edge. One of my 9.6's was like that as well. I guess it is viewed as a production defect...which that is what it is. Ugly though.....I personally did not view them as the stated grade.

Even though there is a big supply there is still amazing demand for it. Its one of those comics that people want in their PC even if they don't collect Spiderman or Venom. It has good artwork and a kick@$$ cover.

This, and the condition issues, make it a winner.
