I’m confused about the recent 9.0 that Heritage just auctioned. I thought the auction started today but maybe I didn’t look carefully at the timing. I’m also really surprised at the hammer price. Does this make any sense?

I think the Curator copy sold for right about where it should be. Last time that copy sold was in 2021 at auction during the comic boom for $566k. So selling today at $540k where silver age comics have slumped in value since then is a huge win for the consignor.

Just to add to this, GPA has two different cert #s listed in sales of this book, which can't be correct.  @gpanalysis

The current label has the same cert # as the original label of this book, sold on Heritage in 2002 for $44,275.  0001885002

That 2002 sale was a first gen label, not the second gen it currently has.

GPA has a curator copy sale listed in 2007, for $60,000, with this cert #: 0041850003.  It probably should not be in the curator section on GPA.

I hand wrote down the census numbers in sept '22.

There are now @25 more grades, higher than 6.0 in the census, than 2 years ago.

Anyone have an AF 15 cover only they're looking to sell?  My coverless issue is looking to get married...

I saw one available on Ali collectables on Instagram not to long ago for $6000+

Thanks!  I believe he reached out to me (someone did with a cover that was in about the same shape).  That one can't be "married" to my book because the spine is detached.  I appreciate the post, though!  I've been looking for a cover for this book for a long time!

Recent addition.  Colors are vibrant and background is still grayish.

I actually kind of dig the binder holes...evokes some thinking about the original owner and how he/she chose to store their treasured comics...more funny than sad to me...the person was probably pretty young and the parents had no clue or cared...not that they necessarily should at that point in time...

Actually, you overstated it by about 50%, per CGC's data. In June 2022 (the most recent CGC data when you took note in Sept 2022), there were 225 books in grade > 6.0 vs 242 now, so only 17 more since then, not 25 (if I understood your point and can trust my eyes).  Just 17!    So, yes, more overall in absolute terms since 2022, but not by much.

That made me curious how grade pops have changed relative to each other. Focusing on 6.0 since you mention it, in June 2022, they were 78 of them.  Today, there are just 85.  Why "just"?

Total universals as of June 2022 were 2328; now 2589.  In June 2022, there were 2328 – 225 – 78 = 2025 universals in grade < 6.0. Today, 2589 – 242 – 85 = 2262 at < 6.0.

So 6.0 was top 13.0% of universal 12-cent version census in June 2022.  Today, 6.0 is top 12.6%.

I've seen this pattern in mid to high-grade SA keys, Marvel and DC.  For years now, such grades have been making up a smaller proportion of submitted books, which made them relatively scarcer as time went on.  Even down to grade 4.0 for AF15 (a nice grade, btw, esp for a mega-key like this), that was still top 40.0% of census in June 2022.  Today, it’s top 39.4% of census (relatively scarcer today).  Not surprisingly, the average grade for universal AF15 has decreased from 3.50 in June 2022 to 3.45 today, per CGC.

I would expect 4.0s and above to continue making up a dwindling proportion of new AF15 (any SA mega-key?) submissions going forward.  People likely had a greater incentive to grade the more valuable books by now.
