I love the list, but I don't think I can take some of those leaps with you lol.

1) AF15

2) FF1

3) IH1 probably my favorite SA book. Maybe alongside FF1

4) JIM83

5) TOS39

6) X1

7) Spidey1 - this was the hardest one for me to place. At the end of the day Spidey owns the SA and if anyone deserves a Non-first appearance showing on the list, it's him (and the avengers I suppose). I thought about moving this to 10, but it just didn't feel right.

8) Av1

9) DD1

10) FF5

Great list!  And yeah I had a couple takes that I know people won't agree with lol

Gonna resurrect this with one or two Hot Takes on my pretty subjective list.

1) AF 15

2) Fantastic Four 5

3) Hulk 1

4) Fantastic Four 1

5) X-Men 1

6) Journey into Mystery 83

7) Tales of Suspense 39

8) Fantastic Four 48

9) Daredevil 1

10) Avengers 1

I think FF5 > FF1.  Still a very early FF issue and Doom as one of the first big marvel Supervillains I think set a standard.  I know I am probably objectively wrong here tho lol

FF48 was so important to Cosmic Marvel, which imo is some of the best stories ever written.  Cosmic stuff is dope.

Spider-Man 1 is overrated

Avengers 1 and DD 1 are underrated

I agree with you on ASM1, DD1 and Avengers 1... but personally there's no way I could put FF5 over FF1 loloverall good list tho.

I think JIM 83 and TOS 39 will drop below X1.  i personally think they already are below, but as soon as MCU things happen I think more people will be on board with the notion

EDIT: Also personally I like Dr Strange way more than Daredevil.  If my list was entirely subjective, ST110 would be on there easily.

Just going by the unrestored, 2.0 entry-level price per copy, which I'd say is the best proxy for mass demand:

1. AF15 $28k
2. FF1 $16k
3. Hulk1 $14k
4. ASM1 $11k
5. X-Men1 $10k
6. JiM83 $8k
7. ToS39 $6k
8. FF5 $5k
9. DD1 $3.5k
10. Avengers 1 $3k
---JiM85 $2k
...ST110 $2k
...TTA27 $2k
...Avengers4 $1200
...FF48 $1k

Did I miss any?

Oh I def wasn't going by price.  If we do that then my list is ordered very different

well, then it's just subjective, in which case I choose ST168 as my top book. :)

A Holy Grail indeed

EDIT: but yeah if this is just for price then it is not much of a thread, we can get those numbers pretty easily and it just is what it is in that case.

I do have to say I was surprised that ASM1 had gone up that much. I assumed it was below the 1st appearances of other big characters.

To me, FF5's popularity is completely weird. Doom doesn't carry his own comic, and doesn't have much going for him in my opinion. I'm shocked it rates as highly both in price and fandom. But hey! To each his own. :)

I think he and Magneto, along with Joker, are the three best Super Villains ever created.  Some great stories around them.  Hickman's Secret Wars (and the run up to that) really cemented Doom in the Mt Rushmore of villains for me.

He is a combination of Iron Man and Doctor Strange but has a more interesting story than both of them (in my opinion of course)

This is almost my list to a T. I'd swap DD1 with ST110 personally but the rest is a carbon copy of my answer. :headbang:

Where would TTA 27 have ranked before the movies? I don’t get the current lofty status of that book. I mean isn’t Ant-Man/Giant Man/Goliath/Yellowjacket a third or even fourth rate character? Maybe I’ve missed something in the 48 years since I stopped collecting Avengers. (shrug)

Hank Pym through all his iterations, while second tier, is to the Avengers what Martian Manhunter is to the JLA — a kind of backbone character through the years. Plus, pre-internet, the book was practically apocryphal. Just didn’t turn up in LCS’s much. And it’s early Marvel: one of three 10-cent books at the birth of the marvel hero era, along with FF 1 and 2. Like many books, the movie era lifted its price point,  but it was an established key before that. Different situation than say Groot and #13. Hope this helps.

Thought I'd see if anything changes on this list at 6.0 instead of 2.0......  LOTS of changes.

-Xmen1 moves from 5 to 2.

-FF1 drops to 4

-DD1 drops out of the top 10 replaced by TTA 27

1. AF15 $84,000
2. X-Men1 $46,000

I love the bump!

Interesting to see the evolution of some of the discussion here. FF52 is now a super key and probably a Top 15 on the list. It was nowhere to be found when this thread was started. Wakanda shows up, Black Panther is a badass and BOOM…heavy hitting SA key.

Bump this thread in another 7-8 years and watch what happens to Thor 165 and FF 67… 😉

Now that this thread is resurrected, does anyone think the list has changed since this thread was last relevant?  I think ST110 and DD1 might be higher up these days.

Agree. Remove price as the main indicator as scarcity (see TTA 27) and other variables come in to play too much. When I think about important keys of characters we know and love today, I think a few have changed from the original 2014 lists.

+++ Strange Tales #110 (1sr Doctor Strange) - This book was a solid C-level key along with Daredevil #1 back then.

+ Fantastic Four #52 (1st Black Panther)…Wakanda forever. ‘Nuff said.

- Avengers 1 - 2014 wasn’t too long after the first Avengers movie was released. This one has lost some luster since then in favor of a few other risers in my book

+ Tales to Astonish #35 (1sr Ant-Man) - the first appearance of Ant-Man, not Hank Pym…and I think some collectors have realized that over the past 7 years. His presence on the silver screen has helped quite a bit.

++ Fantastic Four #85 (1st Loki) - was a D-level key back in 2014. Annoying little pest of a brother and mainstay in the universe, but not hugely important. That has obviously changed.

I see books like X-Men #1 and Thor #165 gaining strength over the next decade…
