GRRRRR....so sick of the EBay overgrade, share in my pain.

30 posts in this topic

I am so tired of the EBay overgrade. Got back home from school today (I am on Thanksgiving break) and I was eager to open the 3 comics I got in the mail. All 3 were off EBay and all 3 from different sellers. Here they are, and needless to say I am far from pleased. Feel free to share any of your horror stories and make me feel better.

This was listed as F+....sure, if you ignore the gigantic crease running through the middle. frustrated.gif

This one was listed as VF. Correct me if I am wrong, but VF books aren't usually filthy and scuffed with 1/2" spine stresses and rounded creased corners are they? makepoint.gif

and last but not least, here is the lone correctly graded book. Many thanks to bwooster for knowing how to grade this sweet WW 200 cloud9.gifhail.gif

Ebay grading is the worst! Too many books being sold by sellers who either can not grade, or set the grade high on purpose. It's created a number of problems:

1) "I don't want to sell books on Ebay because I won't get the prices I should get."(That's because of the bad grading of others. People automatically assume the book will be in a lesser grade).

2) I'll bid on this book at up to 70% of guide (because the book is probably over-graded,...(see reason # 1).

3) Overstreet is not relivent to the market, look at recent Ebay sales. ( see reason # 1 & # 2).

Things I have learned: There's a book on Ebay. It's got a BIN price that is 70% of Overstreet guide for the condition as stated. I get the book and the actual grade is equal to the Overstreet value for that grade. (see reason # 1, #2 & # 3).

Not to even mention what you do if the book is grously (sp?) misrepresented: can I return it? Will I get a refund?

Moral of the story: It's a Circle Jerk! makepoint.gif

The best situation is where you view the book in person before buying, such as at a LCS or convention. The next best is to buy from a dealer after checking thier return policy. Just MHO. hi.gif

Oh, and then there's the seller who buys a CGC graded book and then pops the book out of it's slab and lists it as half a grade higher than it was graded, or takes a restored book and lists it as unrestored. Too many things can happen with an Ebay experience! And then there's the Comic-Keys scenario,....Private auctions, feedback hidden,.....If I want to gamble, I'll go to a casino! makepoint.gif

It's a little like a sign I saw today at a local "watering hole":

Everyone here brings pleasure: some by coming and other's by leaving.

I think alot of buyers end up dealing only with a small group of honest sellers. Reputation is everything these days if you want to sell at FMV. Either that or CGC/CGG.

Personally, I've made my best buys from unknown sellers that I took a chance on because the price was so cheap I couldn't really lose. Doesn't happen too often though.

Guess I am a gambling man. yay.gif

Very true, but it's getting to the point where the positive feedback has to be 99.? or better and even then it a Krap Shoot.

27_laughing.gif Had to spell "Krap" because of the filter. sumo.gif

See you at the Black Jack table? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Feedback is deceptive. Most don't give negs because they will get negs in return and lower their feedback. It's what they used to call "Mutual Deterance" back in the cold war. We don't use ours because we know they'll use theirs.

True again: I have personally not left feedback if I felt the deal was a wash. The return on negative feedback keeps buyers from speaking thier actual feelings. A nuetral can do the same. The one time I felt a Negative to be be truely needed I was unable to post it because the Dirty Rat had already been shut down. frustrated.gif

Good point! thumbsup2.gif I thought about that as I was posting earlier, but chose to leave it out. There are many variables to be considered when buying/selling on Ebay. I'm sure there are other points soon to be discussed. popcorn.gif
