Have A Cigar

1,373 posts in this topic

I thought this might work - but the results will say if it is sweet or a dudzola! I thought it would be fun to have a place in Comics General to simply show off the latest acquistions we are especially pleased with.

I'll start off with my latest: a cover I have really liked but finally got in a decent grade this past week (Fine-).Not a real rarity but not too easy to come by!

grin.gif A really nice Hollingsworth cover - love the foreground perspective of the muddied skeletal hands.

Love That "Witch"!

PS - if this has been tried before my abject apologies! frown.giffrown.gifgrin.gif

Seems like a good thread to me pov... laugh.gif

I won't bore anyone with the bronze and silver stuff I picked up that is pretty common...instead I'll show my latest oddity books that I am fairly pleased with.

This first book was so cheap I couldn't afford not to buy it. I am not really a collector of Classic Comics but when I was able to get this first edition for $8.00 I said ..."Yeah...I can do that."

Classic Comics #23

This second book was to add to my #1's collection and seems to be rather difficult to find in high grade. This one is the best one that I have been able to find so far...

Werewolf #1

I am learning to appreciate the talent of artists that are younger than I am. Picked up a few detailed Sean Chen Iron Man orig. art pgs. He has worked on Wolverine, X-O Manowar. Upcoming Elektra comic.

Sample with Tony Stark & babe.

This book is basicly "worthless" from a $ standpoint, but it took me over a year to find this single copy. I've never seen another copy of it and it completes my run of this title (#1-7).

You can see the other 6 covers via these links if you want a good laugh.

Come on guys! Scan and post one of your recent acquisitions that you're happy to finally have. I know that there’s no controversy or negativity in this thread, but look at it as a chance to actually contribute something positive to the forum!

I already have several nice slabbed and unslabbed copies, but this one just looks so solid, which is becoming hard to find in raw books. I can't stop buying copies of this book. I think I might have a problem. crazy.gif

And this one I got right before Christmas. It's scarce above VF/VF+. The census shows only 1 better, and 1 equal, so I was lucky to get it. Also, this is a very solid copy, easily the best I've ever seen on this book.

I've been trying to get a nice copy of Fantastic Four #49 for several years. Lost a 9.2 in mid-2001 that went for $750; was second high bidder behind "essoilman" for a 9.6 in late 2001 that went for about $2100; and I lost Greggy's 9.6 that went for stupid money to Josh at ComicLink. Last Sunday, however, I won a 9.2 on Heritage for $600! I was extremely pleased!!! I finally got it Wednesday. It's my second-favorite FF cover behind #82!! Here's a scan:

FF, sweet copy! One of my favorites as well. And $600 is a very nice price.

I remember Greggy's FF. It got too stupid for me as well.

The weird thing about #49 is that the vast majority of the copies I see are almost perfectly centered, which is in stark contrast to #48 where the vast majority of copies out there are very off-centered with the front wrapping around to the back (Spidey 33, which came out just weeks before FF 48, has the same front-to-back cover wrap problem). I guess Marvel saw how crappy the printers were doing with the cover sets that month and made them clean up their act.

And yea, $600 is a VERY nice price. But the seller got hosed--this thing is definitely worth more than the $450 he cleared on it. The Heritage bridge toll is a hefty one indeed.

Interesting, and now that I think about it you're right. Do you have a nice #50? These 2 books have eluded me in NM-/NM(for a good price anway).

Nah, if I'm patient I can probably find a NM- raw for much cheaper. If it was a CGC 9.4, that's different because I don't think I'll be able to find a raw NM.

The blazing one has one cheaper on his site, $875 if memory serves.

I got a really nice raw #50 from Ted VanLiew in November or December 2002 for $425. He graded it at NM-, and I think he's right. It has less spine stress than Comgeek's, and the top/bottom/right are almost flawless. Come to think of it, the #50 was my the last great cigar I got prior to the #49! He also sold me a GREAT Daredevil #8 for $225 he called a NM-, but it looks more like a 9.4 to me. I got some overgraded books in that lot, but the FF 50 and DD 8 more than made up for the overgrades, so I just kept them all without returning anything.
