comic sceen in vegas????

32 posts in this topic

I love Vegas and try to go every year, though I have never visited a comic shop there. However the big news for me is that Wizard World is bringing their big con to Las Vegas next year for the first time. To be held in the LV Convention Center on April 24th - 26th. I'll be there!!

There was a horrendous show in Vegas around 2003. I think it was a Wizard show, but don't remember for sure.

Can Vegas support three shows?

Avatar has a lot of gaming, it's in a shopping center with a grocery store and a good used book store (Dead Poets). They used to be Dark Tower a while back. Good for new books, but no back issues to speak of. New books just get rotated into longboxes after going unsold for a few months. Intersection of Charleston and Rainbow, so it's pretty close to Red Rock casino.

I had a strange transaction there. Guy at the Riveria show wanted a TTA 27 I had, and offered me $2,000 in store credit for it. I agreed, but when I got to the store, every back issue was triple its value. He wanted $600 for a Sea Devils 1 that was worth $250, and $100 for a book that was on ebay for a BIN of $25. Nice guy, and a good looking store, but insane pricing. He only had two short boxes of older books and wouldn't let me take statues, so we never made the deal.

Agreed. The speech to text transcribing tech for blind people isn't perfect. Give him a break.

Is it the software? Is any being used? Is it the user and the ridiculous nature of his posts regardless of grammar or spelling?

if you are in vegas..wouldnt the comic book scene the last scene that you would be looking for? (shrug)
I always thought one really high end store would work out there. People go there to spend money on things outside the gaming area. They have hundred dollar hamburgers and $600 tickets to the circus. Look at all those shops selling diamonds and watches. They don't like the winners flying home with that money either.

Yeah, I could see a premium gallery-type store there, more like Samuel L Jackson's shop in Unbreakable. The tax laws there are favorable to businesses, and lots of people are willing to spend their money. I don't think you'd get the daily foot traffic, but I bet you could get at least one big spender per week.

I just moved out to the Vegas area a couple of months ago and so far I am pleased with the comic book scene. I can back up the recommendation of Maximum Comics as a quality shop. Last week I was in there and they had Amazing Spider-man #121 CGC 9.4 Twin Cities Pedigree for sale for $975. Not a bad price at all the way that book has been trending these days. Several slabs, decent assortment of back issues.

I will check them out when I am there every weekend for football.

CAL making time once again...

A nice shop, IMO. That reminds me, I should go tonight!

That was the Extrosion Con. And yes it was horrible. Very badly thought out as far as location, walking routes, parking, etc. Great guest list, if I recall, but horribly run. So badly run that we had a decade where people decided that Extrosion's pitiful output meant that Las Vegas could not support a show.

3 a year might be pushing it, but the 2 we currently have have been shattering promoter's expectations as far as attendance, so who knows?

Within the context of the thread at the point I made my comment, I disagreed. Now, after his "big breasted blond" comment a few posts up, I am now rethinking my stance on this guy. So, I retract my "rude"

I have been in Las Vegas most of my life, (since the mid 60's) so I think I know the comic scene here pretty well. There are two ways to look at it, shops for new comics and the vintage comics scene.

Not a big fan of Maximum's. I like Alternate Realities better and Cosmic would be my second choice.

No real good shops for old comics (Cosmic has a lot, but not collector quality). Torpedo Comics is opening a warehouse/storefront kind of shop in the Fall, that will be the best vintage shop this city has ever seen.

The convention scene is picking up, as has been previously mentioned, the Amazing show is getting better every year.

Lots of serious collectors with nice collections here, you just have to get to know them, but they are here.
