Tales from the Tampa Bay Comic Con -- with pics!

40 posts in this topic

First of all I would very much like to congratulate Bill (Tupenny Conan) and Stephen (KingofRulers) for putting together an amazing show! TBCC is growing rapidly and is quickly becoming one of the premiere cons in the region.

With my academic work on comics and pulps I'm doing a lot of panels these days at various cons, so this year, Bill and Stephen brought me in to be one of the two guest panel hosts. It was a lot of fun and I got to interact with some fascinating individuals, including some that I have been fans of since I was a kid.

I was busy though -- doing well over a dozen panels with guests like Steranko, John Rhys-Davies, Marv Wolfman, Caity Lotz (Black Canary from Arrow), Brighton Sharbino and Kyla Kenedey (Lizzie and Mika fro WD), Daniel Cudmore, and others.

Things kicked off right away on Friday with a panel on Marv Wolfman. Super nice guy and a true pleasure to talk with.

Then I had the WD girls! Holy carp, these girls were something else -- like a force of nature. They were a riot! I was actually a little worried about to approach doing a panel with two 11 year old girls, but the three panels I did with them over the weekend were some of funniest ones.

Even better, I got them to plug my Zombies from the Pulps! book. ;)

Most of the time, when I wasn't doing panels, I was hanging out with some of my favorite folks: publisher J. David Spurlock and the Frazetta Girls in their booth with Steranko, Frank Brunner, and co-creator of Ren & Stimpy, Bob Camp.

Friday night was the VIP dinner party. That's me and Bill flanking Steranko -- 'cause that's how Theagenes and Tupenny roll.

L-R: Sara Frazetta Taylor, Spurlock's fiancee Leigh (obscured), Frank Brunner (obscured), me, Steranko, Bill, Bob Camp, Bob's girlfriend Michele, Spurlock, Britt Frazetta Taylor, and Sara's boyfriend Joey.

Highlights of the evening included discussing video games and augmented reality with Steranko and Wolfman as being the natural evolution of sequential art. Then watching 1930s porn cartoons on the smartphone with Bob Camp and Frank Brunner. After a while John Rhys-Davies came over and joined us and told ribald tales about Brian Blessed, Omar Sharif, and Peter O'Toole. Then he and I started talking archaeology and Herodotus and bored everybody to death. Good times.

More later...

Not only is Jeff one of my favorite people in comics, he's one of my favorite people in life. I must confess, I'm a Theagenes fanboy. I'm really happy you enjoyed yourself, Jeff. (worship)

Kudos.

Thank you.

You didn't get Affleck to show up?

If Affleck were one of our celebs, I'd invite every poster in the BMvSM thread to attend as my personal guests.
