RIP Kelly Freas

Frank Kelly Freas passed away at 4:46 this morning. He was under hospice care and with his wife, Laura, at their Los Angeles home.

 

Kelly was an eleven time Hugo Award winning illustrator of cover and interior art for science fiction, fantasy, advertising, and MAD Magazine. Active in the science fiction field from 1950 until weeks before his death, Kelly illustrated stories by writers such as Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, A. E. Van Vogt, Poul Anderson, and Frederik Pohl.

Yes, but it is originally the cover to a 1953 Astounding:

 

Oct 1953 Astounding

 

I think (someone know for sure ?) that this was Freas' first work for Astounding.

 

He did at least one cover for Analog as late as June 2001.

 

Think about that ... a 48-year association with one magazine (Astounding became

Analog ... sometime in 1960 ??).

Man, bummer of a week so far....... first Freas... now Eisner

 

Was a huge Freas fan... but I never knew he painted Woman on WW II Bombers, nor painted over 500 Franciscan saints.

 

May both Rest in Peace

 

I hope the "Deaths usually come in 3's" does not hold true this week.
