Kirby's Best Work After Marvel?

But Kamandi became less interesting (art wise) when Berry started inking Kirby.

OK, but that goes for the artwork alone, and also the late issues (not by Kirby) are quite a trip… worth reading! :)

Yes, but when Berry takes over from Royer, the art is really not that good anymore. Berry was a pretty bad inker for Kirby, except for a few Losers issues.

I never read the non Kirby issues.

Thibodeaux was not such a suitable inker for him as well, but Jack wanted to give work to him as he was a young artist in need of an income at the time. Jack has always been very generous.

I never got that. Why didn't Kirby simply use the best inkers he could get. Here he is drawing amazing scenes and he allows hacks to nullify half of his effects. Its almost as if he drew for himself, and didn't care what the readers ended up seeing.

Kirby's 70's work at DC was IMO Kirby at his purest and best. Royer was Kirby's favorite inker both because he could keep up but more importantly he didn't change anything. For those that are not fans of this period in his career, it should be noted you were seeing Kirby the way Kirby wanted you to see his work. Probably for the first time.

Like others have said, overall I liked The Demon the best. But the 4th World titles in their entirety have a brilliance to them that is hard to describe. Kirby was onto something - and in an interview in the NY Times magazine he even said he wasn't exactly sure what it was or where it was going. He was trying to tap into the frustrations and dreams of 20 somethings when he was 50 something.
