Fox is once again developing a one-hour TV drama named after the iconic hometown of an iconic comic book character, Archie Comics confirmed Thursday in a press release.

"'Riverdale' offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealistic twists of small-town life plus the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade," reads the official announcement. "Set in the present in the small fictional town of Riverdale, New York. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones. Popular gay character Kevin Keller will also play a pivotal role. In addition to the core cast, 'Riverdale' will introduce other characters from Archie Comics’ expansive library, including Josie and the Pussycats.

The show will be produced by Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions (Arrow, The Flash) and written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer at Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee, Afterlife with Archie).

“This is a historic moment for Archie Comics, and we couldn’t be happier to partner with FOX, Warner Bros. and Greg Berlanti to bring our characters to television,” said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater in the press release. “Greg and Roberto are experts when it comes to making great, compelling television and bringing beloved comic book creations to life on the screen. They’re the perfect team to welcome viewers to ‘Riverdale.'”

“This is something we’ve been working on for awhile now, figuring out the best way to bring these characters to life for what will be, essentially, the first time,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “The entire team working on ‘Riverdale' is as passionate about Archie as Jon and I are, so it feels like the stars have finally aligned for Archie and the rest of the gang.”

"'Riverdale' offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealistic twists of small-town life plus the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade..."

:eyeroll:

Sounds more like "Desperate Housewives" to me, but with a teenie-bopper angle.

You know what would be really "bold and subversive" these days? An Archie TV show that appealed to both adults and children, with charming and funny scripts, colorful characters, and (gasp!) a more general celebration of "wholesomeness" rather than yet another predictable and tiresome deconstruction of it.

Yeah...like that'll ever happen...

+2 Stupid beyond belief. yeah, let's make a show about the Archie universe that's not like the actual Archie universe.

"darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade"

What does that even mean? Vampires? Demon Worshippers? Furries?

Two thoughts on this.

1.Can anybody name one live-action show produced by the cable or mainstream networks that has this general celebration of "wholesomeness? hm

2.Can anybody blame Archie for signing with Fox?

According Comichron Archie the comic average monthly sales figures in 2013 were 11.098. :o

Annual Archie sales figures.

With Archie going on Fox the characters will be exposed to millions of viewers each week. Many which will be new and in that all-important 18-34 demographic that advertisers love.

So if your Archie Comics this deal with Fox is your golden parachute to getting your characters out there in the public.

Sounds like 'The Stepford Wives' meets 'The End Of The World'.

What a cash grab at the expense of the integrity of the character.

Two points.

1.I think we should watch it first before we jump to conclusions.

2. Archie Comics is trying to keep themselves in business,as their overall sales are terrible. This deal with Fox will help Archie Comics much more revenue wise then if they ignored it, and continued to have no presence on television.

1: No, of course not. Which is precisely why producing such a live-action show would be "bold and subversive" (their marketing phrase...not mine). hm

Honestly, I have trouble picturing either approach really 'working'. (shrug) Live-action Archie seems to me a tough concept to pull off in 2014.
