You're overlooking "localized pressing," with an iron... apparently it's not very hard to press only a particular page or the front or back cover. So measuring the "vertical height" of a book wouldn't necessarily yield any revealing info.

I agree. Using a heat-adjustable tack iron is a common tool for localized pressing. I didn't really factor in the localized stuff since the suggestion seemed to be about full-book pressing (or I assumed such blush.gif).
