One time some pierced out dude saw my fingers and was like 'oh wow you got them removed?'

Apparently that is a 'thing' too...

The gentleman in question may deserve our sympathy rather than our derision.

It may be likely there's something seriously wrong going on there.

-just sayin'

People who get laid off from work deserve sympathy. People who lose loved ones from drunk driving car accidents deserve our sympathy. People who go off to fight for our way of life and come back scarred deserve our sympathy.

This "gentlemen" deserves 10 lifetimes of derision for being a insufficiently_thoughtful_person and possibly contaminating humanity's gene pool.

Could be hm

Yet, mental illness and emotional disorders get short shrift, in my opinion. They are diseases, in every sense of the word.

If a person has cancer or Parkinson's or some other disease and it manifests in tumors or tremors or the like, people generally respond with sympathy and understanding.

The average response to common manifestations of mental illness with understanding and sympathy? Not so much.

It's as if the person were to blame for having the condition, its symptoms, and its consequential behaviors.

Imagine if we treated the victims of other diseases in a similar manner.

I feel that's part of the problem with mental health matters. The stigma. If a person sees a psychiatrist or psychologist, he's "crazy". If a person regularly sees a dentist or doctor, he's considered "normal".

Now, this person in question is said to be "physically and intellectually healthy" - yet it's fair to at least wonder otherwise, given his behavior.

oh.... I thought we were all talking about the Dr. who performed this ..... this..... uh.... :baiting:

1.2 Deep chest piercing

1.3 Eyeball implant

1.4 Flesh stapling, flesh plating and pocketing

Good point. :P

P.S:

I suspect this story may also be misleading, in the sense that this guy may be modifying his looks to resemble a demon or something, but I don't think he's aiming for a Red Skull appearance.

Given what people are doing nowadays, he could be a lot closer to the Red Skull than he is.

I bet the reporter, or whoever, just couched this story in the Marvel Comic character to garner more views.

Sorry, but this is overly simplistic. Maybe he's simply a insufficiently_thoughtful_person, maybe he is a product of serious abuse, or maybe he's mentally ill. It could be all of those things. This kind of thing very often comes from abuse. The act is very clearly stupid, but who knows why he is doing it. People who are abused and grow up to become mentally ill, or just straight up azzhats ARE victims of circumstance. I get why people don't want to see it that way because it requires nuanced thinking and a bit more empathy; derision is much easier. And this society likes to deride and punish without trying to understand why people do this crazy shlt.

I'm not saying we all have to walk around with bleeding hearts, but the derision really isn't necessary. This dude is already suffering and will continue to suffer for his insane decisions.

My wife is an MD, and has told me stories about people on manic binges, who go out and have body modification done, only to eventually wonder "what the hell did I do to myself?".

This guy's got issues on some level.

If you're thinking of having body modification:

First take a one week cooling off period to think about it.

At the end of the week, if you still want to do it. don't.

Something I haven't seen come up yet is..... where did the money for this operation come from. That's gotta be expensive and I can't see anyone's company insurance payin for something like this.

So many people who get into this kind of thing don't know when to stop. Whether there's something about the process that warps their judgment or whether it appeals to tasteless people is open to question.

This sort of thing provokes a lot of anger, disdain and mockery. Strange really that it does. He's a very unusual fellow but he's not hurting anyone by pursuing his hobby. I just hope he's happy, and if he is, great.

There are millions of other people out there who are unusual in far more disturbing and worrisome ways, who look completely average.

And I do not believe this is remotely new. There is a long history of people who made a meagre living by deliberately becoming freakish. Within certain very specialized circles this chap is probably quite highly regarded.
