White Mountain J.I.M.s/Thors:

21 posts in this topic

Thanks and kudos to Hans (HKP) for searching through his Greg Manning catalogs from 5 years ago (despite a busy schedule thumbsup2.gif) for the following list of all the White Mountain Pedigree Journey Into Mysterys and Thors that were offered in those auctions. Some random observations looking at this list:

1.) They were marketed at the time as the ultimate J.I.M. run however looking at the structural grades and PQ, many copies were inferior to some other Pedigree equivalents. #83 9.6 aside which was not offered here, the Pacific Coast, Mass, Northland, Boston and Canadian collections have all produced finer individual copies, as did the Golden State and Circle 8 collections.

2.) I seem to recall the #84 9.2 sold for $2,200 in this auction, which seemed high at the time but like an extremely shrewd purchase now.

3.) There is a perception that CGC hammer down on "Marvel Chipping", however the unslabbed #90 was graded an 8.0 due to this defect and CGC agreed with this grade upon slabbing.

Here is the list:

84 9.2 OW-Cream

Great information, Beltan and Hans, on an important run of JIM/Thor books. The Greg Manning grading was apparently fairly tight. The JIM 91 that I acquired recently from JiveTurkey was given a 9.2 (ow) by CGC. Missing from the sale is the WM 114, which is a CGC 9.4 that Brent has for sale currently on his website. As for the Marvel chipping, CGC may have been modest in taking the WM copy of JIM 90 down to an 8.0, but they were much harsher on the chipped PC JIM 90, which is an otherwise-flawless copy that wound up at 7.0.

I love the WM pedigree for its smell of (mellowed) mothballs combined with fresh newsprint - it is unfortunate that the slabs take away this sense of the newstand freshness of these books.

r100,

Nice post. I remember when the early ones were available in Manning's auction. I wound up buying a bunch from the guy who bought a lot at the auction. They were really nice books (the early issues were the ones I got: 86, 91, etc.). Funny, I don't own any of them anymore as I used the JIM's to trade for other stuff at that time (most likely PC's of one title or another). I wish I had some of these back.

hi.gifDoug, I have a question for you ,pertaining to JIM's . Whether it's Pedigree or not ,In your Opinion do you think JIM # 93 is a scarce book ?? It's one of those books that I myself hardly ever see in dealer catalogues or shows .What in your Opinion, are the most scarce Jim's to find?? "in grade or any condition" BTW # 93 1st Radioactive Man ,I think is so cool!! 893applaud-thumb.gif

Human,

All the JIM's in the 90's are fairly hard to find, but 90 is impossible, 91 is tough in grade, 94 is very tough, 95 is even tougher. 96-99 are much more readily available.

Imho, these are the toughest JIM's to find in 9.4 or better (and pretty much to find period):

90

84

95

94

93

108

109

89

91

92

Just an off the top of my head guess. I think I'm pretty close to being right, but a look at the census will help out even more.

Great post, btw. Love them Journeys!

Pacific Coast copy. Undoubtedly, the most undergraded 9.4 I own. It's pretty much flawless ! 893whatthe.gif

Hi Doug

Agree with you on that J.I.M. list. In the #100's, #108 in particular is real tough in grade. I wonder where someone would find one of those in 9.4 ? 893scratchchin-thumb.gifthumbsup2.gif

p.s. I would also include #83, #100, #107 and #115 in that list of toughest J.I.M.s to find in grade.

When completing my run, I was almost dead-on with your list. The last five I needed in this order were:

Stunning JIM 93. thumbsup2.gif As far as being undergraded, I cannot understand why so few of the PC Journeys graded at 9.6, whereas so many of the other runs containing PC books of similar vintage are filled with 9.6s and the occasional 9.8. Sure, it is possible that the PC JIMs were slightly less well preserved, but I tend to think it has more to do with the vagaries of CGC than anything.

but - -- unless they were all sent as a run on the same day, the "vagaries" of CGC would have resulted in grades for the JIMs in similar numbers to the rest of the PC books. right? Just as many would have been "overgraded" as "undergraded" like ALL books CGC sees.

r100,

Thanks for the post. Nice to be back in touch with you.

You're right, of course. 115 is tough, but 117 is even tougher (NO 9.6's to dat, I think!). I just got a 115 in 9.6 (Northland copy).

BTW, that JIM 93 you scanned is unbelievable. Looks nicer than my Canadian original owner copy 9.4. PC's have that extra bounce to them, if you know what I mean.

Hope all else is well and keep in touch.

Doug
