The problem with those arguments is that we will never change anyone's mind. It is the industry norm that IH #181 is the first Wolverine, we cannot do anything about it. UXM #266 is the first Gambit. So on and so forth…

Sure we can argue logistics, but they're all pointless no matter how logical they may be.

So correct. It what the market dictates, and the market dictates Hulk #181 as the main key.

So here's the questions... which books are most hurt value-wise by not having the character in question on the cover?

FF48 and ST110 still go for a pretty penny, would cover appearances add 10-20%?

Would "lesser" characters first appearances double the possible value of the comic if they were on the cover? In theory lesser characters would benefit more from the cover attention...

thoughts?

Another to add to the list...Avengers #195, 1st full Taskmaster...The dude has a huge panel appearance, full costume, interacting with characters but CGC states "1st appearance in cameo on last page". Avengers #196, with Taskmaster being on the cover seems to be the more sought after issue and CGC label says "First Full appearance of Taskmaster and Origin". Marvel.com lists #195 as Taskmaster's first appearance...

To me, a cameo is something small, like a mushy faced Darkseid on a computer monitor in a panel...Comparing the two "1st appearance in cameo on last page"...Look at the differences between those two panels...They are light years apart...Darkseid as a cameo, yes - Taskmaster and Wolverine, not so much...And I say this as someone who owns Hulk #181...

I'd say Avengers #195 - First appearance of Taskmaster, Avengers #196 - Origin of Taskmaster. SPJO #134 - 1st cameo appearance of Darkseid on last page (that one I think they got right)...

Would be interesting if there was an "official" comic book definitions/protocol for defining cameo's, first appearances, etc.

Supposedly venom's first appearance is web of spiderman 18....

It's an arm that doesn't trigger Peter's spidey-sense.

Web of Spider-man #24 has a black costumed arm that doesn't trigger Peter's spidey-sense.

While it's true those could easily be recognized as Venom's arm... it's still just an arm.

Despite the Man of Steel #17 apologists...

I'm not sure an arm ever deserves to be a first appearance.

Is anyone satisfied they've really seen a new character when they've seen an arm? hm

(Except maybe "Thing" from Addam's Family... cousin itt.) :foryou:

As far as the New Mutants Annual #2 goes, Psylocke is named as such for the first time, but she does not have a costume yet. We can clearly see her on the cover of the book which directly preceeds NM Annual #2 in her storyline, which is Captain Britain (vol.2) #14. Betsy is in the background with the black glasses, having been blinded by the villain in previous issues. Mojo give her back her sight in an artificial way, turning her into his "puppet", and in the end Betsy did not feel comfortable with the artificial eyes.

In Captain Britain #14 we already have Psylocke on the cover, it’s just not called Psylocke but she already has her powers. Question, just in case, could be where she uses her costume first.
