Restoration advice wanted, Action Comics 2 cover

31 posts in this topic

Good evening comics fans!

Well, I've exhausted every contact I have, and they've exhausted most of theirs, and we've collectively come up with bupkus.

For those of you who remember my brag thread from a few weeks ago you'll recall that there was one piece that I didn't reveal.

NOT FOR SALE NOT FOR SALE NOT FOR SALE NOT FOR SALE

Action Comics 2, complete front and back cover.

Assuming that I ever manage to run down a coverless copy, not impossible I'm guessing, but certainly not easy, I need advice from all you Big Dogs on what to do.

Everything is there except the dime sized chunk on the spine, and although the spine is split and there are a couple tears on the BC plus the big one on the FC, all the other paper seems to be there.

I'm torn whether to put together a married copy, and if so how much restoration to have performed.

What opinion does the crowd have? Do I send the whole batch off to Matt or other conservator, just wrap the cover around the guts, or just what?

If I decide to have it married and restored, how much should be done to it?

Tell me what you all think about it, and if you have knowledge of a coverless #2 I'd be obliged for any information.

Thanks,

Rick Santman

I sold my coverless Action 2 (missing 1st wrap else centerfold out? can't remember which) to a forumite in Eastern Canada several years ago. Decent wht to off-wht page quality. I doubt that he would sell it as Action 1 coverless costs a bit more .... :boo:

Solid cover Rick! Congratulations :applause: That said, I would just try to get an interior and put the cover over it. Done deal

Not a big dog here (just a big mouth :D ), but what will you do with the book after restoration, should you go that route. Is this endeavor in order to sell the book, or keep it?

I collect Superman, this would be for me, at least for the time being. I've never owned a single digit Action before, the earliest I've ever had is issue 20. This would be a dandy addition to my personal collection for a few years.

congrats Rick. You really hit a load of pieces in that collection. That said, I agree with Frank: find a complete interior and just lay it inside of the covers, and Mylar it up. It will look pretty. Hope that that staples on the interior line up to the staple holes on the cover :)

Well, the bulk of the crowd here seems to be heading to the "don't restore" side, although I've had a couple PM's saying "yes, restore".

All toys in the attic until I find a coverless copy to marry it to, and I had been leaning toward a modest restore consisting of tear and spine seal plus connecting the two parts, but now I'm having second thoughts.

Keep those opinions coming!

Hey Rick.

I think you can get 5xs the price unrestored. 20xs just to leave and enjoy.

There is way to many Restored books out there .

I know i have had over 10 Bat 1s 3 Tec 27s even had 3 Action 2s unrestored and the only 1 i kept unrestored was this.

I enjoy this book in this shape more than i would to have a VF rerstored copy.

My Tec 27 was a solid 1.5 unrestored now its a 4.5 E. The thought of a key Goldenage unrestored/untouched is a great feel. Thanks for the Bc (thumbs u

My pleasure, woowoo.

Well, the consensus seems to be leave it alone, provided I can ever run across a coverless copy. And you're all correct, it looks good in a mylar just the way it is, with the book tucked inside it would look better still.

Anyone else want to contribute an opinion?

Well, I'd lean towards restoration. I think there's a ton of potential there for something with outstanding eye appeal. It has several pretty big distractions.

Caveat: I happily buy PLODs for my collection and I really don't share the blue over purple aesthetic. 6.0 PLOD trumps 1.5 blue any day for me.
