Overstreet's phantom issues...

45 posts in this topic

Here is the updated list, corrected, with additions....

Beware (1955) There doesn't appear to exist a #15.

Guess again ;)

The GCD shows this issue was published by Merit, unlike the others, so it's an understandable miss.

The indicia does show that it was published by Merit, as opposed to Trojan for the previous issues, but given the same title, logo, and subsequent numbering, it still qualifies as a Beware 15.

The listing in the Platinum section for Barney Google and Spark Plug is odd. The heading says "1923—No.6, 1928," but below in the price list it says "#5 and #6 do not exist." It looks like a deliberate attempt to introduce some spurious information (in the heading) in order to trap would-be plagiarists. When I asked him, Bob Beerbohm confirmed that no. 5 and no. 6 do not exist.

I don't know if they still list earlier issues in Overstreet, but it is my impression that the only Crime Does Not Pay Annual ( The Best of Crime Does Not Pay) is the 1953 issue.

Completely agree. There are no other annuals (unfortunately) :( .

I'm pretty sure there is more than the one.

I've kept an eye out for 20 years and have never seen another one. I think some of the confusion is that Complete Book of True Crime from 1944 contains CDNP stories, and that somehow translated in speculation that there were issues from 1945-52

You may be correct. Just seems I have thought I've seen another one but I could be wrong. I did notice mycomicshop has four or five listed with no cover pictures but that would make sense if there isn't any.

Tim, have you ever seen Sharp Comics #1? #2 is relatively easy to find, but I've never seen or heard of a #1.

I missed adding that to the list, but did question its existence in my notes. But I can't say for sure...

I have a copy of the black and white cover art for the Harvey Flash Gordon #5 but no one I have ever talked to about it has seen a copy. Plus, it was about the time that Harvey published some half-sized issues to meet subscription obligations with other titles. Has anyone ever seen a copy of this book? When I checked with the people at Overstreet, they contacted Bob who said that he was basing its existence on Bob Beerbohm saying that he had seen it.

Robert Beerbohm has also seen the Tooth Fairy.

No doubt they are best pals - the Tooth Fairy left feedback on his ebay site ("Strict grading, fair pricing, as honest as they come!") too.

Beerbohm's ebay site has been 5 star all the way. The reviews prove it and I have never heard of anybody buying from him on e-bay and giving him an non-favorable review in the last few years.

I have some residual affection for him from ye olden days and I respect his place in the history of the hobby and his knowledge of early comic history, but I had a couple of bad experiences buying from him on eBay in recent years. I wouldn't buy from him again.

Recent?...in the last year?

Certainly within the past two years.

Beerbohm the comic dealer and Beerbohm the comic historian may be the same person, but they have very different reputations.

Getting back on topic... I haven't purchased or seen Overstreet for a few years, but he had always listed a (non-existent in my experience) 1953 reprint of Avon's Flying Saucers along with the 1952 (existent) reprint. I think that needs to be added to the list.
