If the cover is split and detached, I suppose it could be a 1.0

 

If the cover is split, detached, fugly, and brittle looking, it should be a 0.5

and that tape isn't exactly making it look better either (not that it matters anymore)

 

fully split and loose-- the back cover was not in great shape either

 

I just wish I had went with my gut when I had the thought that someone running the contest might want to have books from the top of the range and bottom (yeah I know-- it could be a 9.9 or even a 10-- but 9.8 is pretty much the tops most of the time)
