A question of ethics

55 posts in this topic

I was just wondering what everyones opinion was on a topic. I have no problem with someone selling stuff received in the PIF thread, not necessarily what I would do but to each there own. I do have a problem with someone selling stuff they received in a RAK.

Maybe its just me and I think it is in poor taste to take a RAK and sell it rather than regift it at the time you no longer want it.

What are your thoughts?

PIF and RAK?

Is that some soft porn lingo?

Why yes, yes it is.

But in this case it's Pay It Forward and Random Acts of Kindness.

first I PIF'ed her then I RAK'ed her!

then we really got our freak on!

I think if its yours, do what you want with it, as long as its legal.

Its too hard to gauge the ethicalness of someone else's situation. Some people are good, some people are bad, some people are both, and some people are in NEED. What if they were normal good people struck unexpectedly with tragedy? Who knows? and who has that kind of time to go on worrying about that kind of thing after the fact?

With that being said, I don't have a problem with someone donating something and putting some type of restriction on its sale, for a certain amount of time. Or donating for a specific purpose.

No one is forcing anyone to be a giver, so I try to be a cheerful one whenever I do. When I give something to someone, I want them to get the most benefit they can from it. If that benefit is financial to them, so be it.

I don't know, when you take a RAK and sell it that is called a PIMP in NY.

Not sure what you call it where you come from

Re-gifting a RAK is generally called a 2nd Marriage. First husband is very excited because he doesn't have to pay alimony to the RAK so I'm not sure why that is a bad thing.

When someone takes an offer I put up. I don't worry about what they do with it. As mentioned, I don't know anyone's situation. As long as everyone had an equal chance to claim it, I'm good.

People can do whatever they want with their own property. Giving something to someone with conditions sort of defeats the purpose.

Whenever I give a pan handler a dollar, I duck around the corner, and wait until they leave and secretly follow them to see what they spend it on. And if it's not food or rent, I jump out and go "HA! Caught you, cheater!"

Then I go online and read the classifieds because I've obviously been fired for repeatedly skipping out on work to stalk homeless people and scare the out of them for no apparent reason.

I know my story has nothing to do with the question that Shadow Images posed. But Reader's Digest refuses to print it. And I wanted someone to read it.

I agree … this is wrong and bad. There should be a new stronger word for this like badwrong or badong. Yes this is badong and from this moment I will stand for the opposite of this which is gnodab

I have no issue as once its yours , its yours BUT and this is a big Kardashian But , I do understand how the person who gave the PIF or RAK would be offended. We all say its the thought that counts but if you give a Christmas gift to someone , say a shirt and we see that person re-gift that shirt we get angry (mostly speaking). . I see both sides of this and probably a crummy thing to do (take a PIF OR RAK and sell it) . Again my initial no thought answer is , its yours , do what your like.

Depends on the RAK-if someone sold one of my drawings I'd be super stoked. If it was some odd book I'd be hurt.

What if someone uses the RAK/PIF to try out a new title/artist/writer/whatever, and finds they don't like it? Should they still keep it? Would you feel better about it if they donate instead of selling it?

There are people that try to take advantage of the generosity of others. Generosity is a good thing. Taking excessive advantage of generosity is not. If you take a RAK, I would not consider it good form to turn around and sell it.
