gaz973
I posted in the Ask CGC forum a few weeks ago regarding which issue is the first appearance of the real Domino. That forum is fully moderated so my post disapeared into the mists of the Internet, never to be seen again so I decided to put it out here for discussion. As most people know, the Domino who first appeared in New Mutants # 98 was actually a shapeshifter known as Copycat. We didn't know that in X Force # 8 which was a flashback issue which substantially featured Domino from an earlier point in time when it was really her, she had dialogue and appeared on the cover. However, it was revealed that the current Domino was an imposter at the end of X Force # 11 which then showed the real Domino in a cameo in the last panel. It seems completely weird to me that this issue is the one that CGC notes as her first appearance. Firstly, it's not her first appearance as she appeared in # 8 in about ten different pages, I believe as well as the cover. I don't see why it should matter that it was in flashback, vit was still an appearance. Secondly, # 11 only features a brief cameo anyway so it shouldn't be a first full appearance, even if it did get cpassed as a first appearance. What is the general consensus on this? Jaydogrules
Domino's first "appearance" is still technically NM 98. X-force #8 is a ret-con. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. -J.

You may have been facetious there, but I'm not sure I disagree. If the first appearance of a character is an imposter of the character, we are still first seeing the character in that first appearance. So I like the "first -real- appearance" designation. Whether that is 8 or 11 I will let you nerds decide. But NM 98 being the first appearance doesn't bother me at all.

NM 98 is the book first appearance purists should want to own, for Domino and one or two other characters as well. -J.

valiantman
That's a really weird situation. If a later story said that Superman in Action Comics #1 wasn't the real Superman... what would that mean? New Mutants #98 is dated February 1991. X-Force #8 is dated March 1992. Do you really get to wait a year to say that the first appearance of someone isn't "real"? The first Domino is in New Mutants #98. A year later, it's a Domino appearance in the second year of Domino's existence... so how can the year-later story make the appearance count as first? This just in... the REAL Spider-man is in Amazing Spider-man #149. Peter was a copycat. The first 148 don't count.

Broke as a Joke
It has to be New Mutants 98 because it is her first appearance. This is how they intended her to appear even if it is really not her inhabiting the body.
awakeintheashes
This may get more traction in the Copper thread, but I've wondered about this topic for a bit. NM 98 is Copycat as Domino X-Force #8 features a flashback of the real Domino X-Force #11 features the first time we see Domino in real time. Is there a similar example of this with other characters? Lazyboy
It has to be New Mutants 98 because it is her first appearance. This is how they intended her to appear even if it is really not her inhabiting the body. Then what's Doomsday's first appearance? Appearance/character design is not the same as an appearance. Jaydogrules
Again, X force 8 was a ret-con. It doesn't undo or negate the actual first "appearance" that occurred in NM 98. It just explains it. -J.
Broke as a Joke
This is similar to Avengers 83 and the Valkyrie. First time we ever see the character but it is really the Enchantress portraying her. Even so, most everyone goes with Avengers 83 being the first appearance because that is where the physical form of the character appears first. gaz973
Whether Domino's first appearance was in NM # 98 is a whole other argument. The thing that makes no sense to me from any perspective is that CGC label # 11 as the first appearance of the "real" Domino when it's not the first appearance of any Domino.
