Do you believe these signatures?

45 posts in this topic

I came across this Ebay listing the other day and the FF 49 immediately stood out to me as a fake Kirby because of the bend on the Straight part in the "J". I am no hand writing specialist but I have seen Jack's signature a lot of times and this just screamed Fake to me. Also the Daredevil Romita signature looks faded in one pic and Totally dark in another. Almost as if he thought - hey, I'll trace over this to make it look better.

I'm not calling this person a fraud or trying to start anything. I'm also not considering buying them either way - I'm just interesting in your thoughts.

Other than the numbered versions where he was told to sign the covers, I've never seen a Kirby signature on a cover. And when he did on those books (mostly masterworks), they were small, tight and unobtrusive. Those giant Kirby sigs are bogus.

This is the problem I have with those "authenticated" signatures... how would anyone know for sure one way or the other?
Obviously there's a more scientific way of going about it than asking people on a message board what they think of some scans on an eBay auction. Otherwise I wouldn't have to sign documents every day.

The Romita on the DD book and the Christopher Reeve are massively questionable...MASSIVELY!!!

Sean said it best, there are precious few Kirby cover signatures out there and none that are this big. Cover signatures were not the "in" thing for most collectors until CGC SS took off in 2001. Mr. Kirby passed in 1994 and Mr. Reeve's accident occurred in 1995, well before most would have anyone sign on a cover, much less make a giant mess of to the books like this dolt did.

I messaged the seller and alerted him to this thread. Hopefully he stops by.

Dear Awesomeguy,

Thanks for sending me the thread and by all means you are entitled to your opinion. But these are not fakes. I have a massive collection that my family put together for years when my dad worked as an intern for Marvel. He put in specific requests because of the books he loved and Kirby did them as a favor. The Reeve's book were purchased at an auction back in the 90's and even came with COA's. If there was any question on my books why do I have almost 200 positive reviews for comics and games?

Thanks for enquiring.

Dear superman_82_86,

Thanks for the response. An intern at Marvel should be an easy thing to verify. Also, there is no coa with the reeves book.

His reply

Dear Awesomeguy,

It wasn't listed because I can't verify the place ... Place comes up on eBay as existing at that time but no longer is open. So it's a piece of paper that says it's real but I can't verify so I don't list the COA.

My next message

Dear superman_82_86,

so no coa is better than a questionable coa? How come Kirby signed the front of the book? He never signed covers, always signed on the first interior page. Again, the marvel internship is easy to verify.

Besides the fact that the Kirby sigs don’t even look right, Jack Kirby and his family moved to California in 1969. This would mean the seller’s dad would have had to have been an intern sometime in the '60s (and I’m pretty sure the offices didn’t have interns at that point) and also happened to have been around when Jack came in (he worked at home, he wasn’t sitting around in the “Bullpen”) or the books would have been mailed out to Kirby and shipped back, which also doesn’t make sense.

Here's the reply I got on the FF 49:

It was signed at the San Diego Comic Con on 8/8/1987. Kirby was one of the features guests.

Stan signed it later at the Baltimore Comic Con which was in Aug. 2012. Can't remember the date don't have the COA with me.
