ASSASSIN'S CREED starring Michael Fassbender (12/21/16)

New Assassin's Creed Photo Shows Michael Fassbender In Action

In the newest issue of Total Film (via GamesRadar), Fassbender can be seen on horseback, though the car with the crane-like camera mount riding alongside him will probably not make the final cut, as there was a distinct lack of Volkswagons during the 15th century. At least, that's what the templars want you to think.

The just released issue will also feature interviews with director Justin Kurzel, Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons, and you can view the new photo in the gallery.

ASSASSIN'S CREED Lands The Cover Of Total Film Magazine

Assassin's Creed is a big gamble for 20th Century Fox, especially considering Hollywood's long-documented history with video game films, but, despite that, there's still plenty of reason to be optimistic that this one turns out differently.

Last week, Total Film uncovered their badass cover featuring Fassbender front-and-center as well as a ton of new photos from the Justin Kurzel-directed film.

New Assassin's Creed Trailer Debuts Tomorrow

assassins-creed-new-image-205519.jpg

A new teaser image for Assassin's Creed was released Monday by 20th Century Fox, showing off Michael Fassbender as Aguilar, the Spanish Assassin at the time of the Inquisition, alongside another Assassin (Octavia Selena Alexandru's Lara? It's unconfirmed, but that's the suspicion) on a Spanish rooftop. They look off in the distance, clearly anticipating something...

And that something is a new trailer. The trailer will debut online tomorrow, Fox revealed, with a new look at the Assassin's Creed film, and likely some deeper plot teases after a teaser trailer that didn't tell non-franchise fans much about how the world of the movie and games works.

The First Fan Reactions From The ASSASSIN'S CREED Premiere Are Here, Does It Break The Video Game Film Curse?

Lucky fans, who had the opportunity to watch the movie at yesterday's glamorous New York screening have started to share their reactions and there's a chance that it can be the first universally acclaimed film based on a video game! Not surprisingly, the show belongs to Michael Fassbender (who's also one of the Assassin's Creed producers) and his amazing performance as Callum Lynch and his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha. The other great thing fans surely appreciate is the director Justin Kurzel's faithfulness to the source material - but for people unfamiliar with the games series, this could be a potencial problem.

Assassin's Creed Review Round-Up

The first reviews for Assassin's Creed have surfaced online, and many of the more respected film sites have found few nice words to say. Many critics point to a muddled plot and half-hearted performances as a reason to pass on the video game adaptation.

However, some of the critics claimed that the movie's visuals made it worth watching. They also claimed that - while a bit of a mess - Assassin's Creed was the best video game adaptation ever made. Judging by the genre's previous entries, that isn't saying very much.

IndieWire

While IndieWire critic Dave Erlich states that the movie is "silly and senseless" he also manages to call it "The best video game movie ever made."

The review points out the many flaws of Assassin's Creed, but manages to help lift up a struggling genre as well. Video game movies haven't had a lof of success over the years, but this review provides hope that the right steps are being taken to make this video game adaptations a box office juggernaut.

Variety

Unlike IndieWire, the review from Variety had no kind words for the film.

Critic Owen Gleiberman trashed the decisions of the talented cast members to join the project, the amount of money spent producing the film, and just the overall flop that he considered the film to be.

Independent

Much like IndieWire, Independent thought Assassin's Creed definitely rose up the mess of other video game adaptations.

The review stated that the movie stayed extremely faithful to the video game series - but that isn't always a good thing. Just like the games, the film seems to suffer from a difficult story - but finds itself lifted up by exhilarating visuals.

The Hollywood Reporter

The Hollywood Reporter was in no way kind to Assassin's Creed. While they thought the film suffered from a multitude of ailments, they had some particularly harsh words for the writers.

And although the film's hero is a new one invented for the big screen, writers Bill Collage and Adam Cooper (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Allegiant) and Michael Lesslie (Macbeth) haven't bothered to overlay anything fresh, like personality.

Collider

The title of this Collider review says it all - "Bleak and Unmoving."

"You can have stunning visuals, promising source material and a fantastic ensemble, but all of that is going to cave under the pressure created by a complete lack of access to the characters."
