I haven't made a point of going after the Barks Four Color issues this year, but I've grabbed them when the price seemed right and have actually picked up quite a few. (But missed the one I really wanted - a #238 )

Anyway, here's another I got at Heritage today.

And I love that WDCS #138 as well... probably my favorite of the 1950s run.

I thought about bidding on that but I held off. Glad it went to a boardy. (thumbs u

A fantastic tale! I picked up a great copy of this a number of years ago at Caltech of all places. One of the young engineering students was selling it and it was a beauty!

That's hilarious: I can hardly imagine a more fitting story for a Caltech student (except perhaps "The Mad Chemist"). I went to MIT and we always admired the Caltech students as even more geeky than ourselves.

Here's a nice Barks cover that I got from a friend recently.

PS: the geotag on this photo corresponds to the address of the Copenhagen Marriott.

Great copy and another fun Barks cover. Kind of interesting, though, that he didn't draw a Christmas cover for this December issue.

Great books everyone!

Duffmann, I love the subscription copies, and… the older the better!

Even if the subscriber is not a known person, they always have a story documented.

As I had to force myself to (more or less) stop collecting comic books for now, I went to a convention here in Italy and found and bought a full year run (about 50 issues) for the year 1945 of "Il Vittorioso", an italian journal sized comic publication which was one of the few not to stop publishing during 1944-45.

As Italy was gradually freed by the allies' intervention, in Rome they continued to publish the magazine, and all the 1945 issues were received by subscription by two people (father and son, or maybe brothers?).

But the coolest thing is that they noted in pencil the exact arrival date of each issue, and one has the arrival date of April 25, 1945.

This means a young boy woke up on the day Italy was freed, on "Liberation Day", and found his copy of the magazine delivered to his doorstep. :)

It’s off-topic here, but if you like, I’ll take a photo.

December copies would be pulled before Christmas. The January cover date would still be on the stand. Sure enough the following issue has the nephews singing Christmas Carols outside Donald's window, prompting a hound to start howling.

Hi guys, I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread for a second, but it didn't seem worth starting a new one just to ask a quick question.

As a Barks/Ducks neophyte, I was wondering if you could recommend some good reprint collections, best stories etc.

I see some reprint volumes on Amazon but would welcome some guidance on what the best reads are.

Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

Its all excellent but his peak period is 1948 to 1958. Stories from those years are the best, generally speaking so reprints of that time period are what I enjoy most.

For reprints, your mileage may vary but I enjoy the large format albums put out by gladstone in the late 80s/ early 90s. Picking up a run of the WDCS (walt disney's comics and stories) albums might be a good way to start.

I'd agree with all of that. Here are a few suggestions, in no particular order. These stories have all been reprinted multiple times. Come back and ask if you need help finding any of them.

The Uncle Scrooge stories from Four Color #386, 456 and 495, then Uncle Scrooge #4 - 20 are as good a run of stories as you'll find anywhere. In my opinion they are a bit hit and miss after that, but there are still some beauties (#25 Flying Dutchman and #26 Prize of Pizarro especially).

Some of the Donald Duck one shots are priceless. My favourites are:

#108 Terror of the River

#159 Ghost of the Grotto

#189 Old Castle's Secret

#199 Sheriiff of Bullet Valley

#256 Luck of the North

#267 A Christmas for Shacktown

#408 The Golden Helmet

#422 The Gilded Man

You can't go far wrong with the WDC&S ten pagers from about #80 (when he started to hit his stride) to #180 or so - a phenomenal run of quality.

Have fun!

W WDC 166-01 Midgets Madness

I am probably the only one but I think that issue about Donald and midget race cars was a favorite.

WDCS 125 and 140 have the first Woodchucks and Gyro stories, respectively.

And WDCS 146 has the Omelet story which was a favorite of many.

In addition to the previously listed stories, I love:

March of Comics 4 Maharajah Donald

March of Comics 20 Darkest Africa - newer printings are censored

Donald Duck's Atom Bomb (Cherrios giveway)

I spoke like Professor Sleazy from Atom Bomb for months, "Verr-ry Beculiar, Brovessors!"

I finally got a copy of MOC 20.
