My dad is looking to sell his collection

67 posts in this topic

Depending on how he stored the books, 27 long boxes could be about 8100 books. Hell get the most money out of cherry picking the key and individual sellers and selling those and then selling the rest out as lots or even one big sale to a dealer.

Putting a question out there... does anyone ever sell the non-keys right away in bulk lots along side the keys, instead of after them? The options always seem to be, price everything as a single and flush after X amount of time, or sell the keys, and bury the rest for later. I know a dealer buying a collection wants to recover as much of his costs as soon as he can, but picked lots just make people turn up their noses, and say all the "good stuff" is gone.

Does anyone or has anyone sold Amazing Spideys as 101, 102, 103-110, 111-118, 119-120, 121, 122, 123-133...?

... I helped a friend sell his collection over a few years when he lost his main job. Most of the sales occurred on the boards and we did it much like you said. The nicer books realized strong prices while the lots basically went for maybe 25% of guide and sold primarily to part time dealers who I assume added them to inventory to sell at 50% or so. Even ASM will have issues that go unsold if priced individually here. With the internet in full force, it's a buyer's market on most books, so the lot approach will help you achieve a sell through and cut back on the amount of shipping required..... which can quickly turn into a LOT of work. GOD BLESS...

Would love to get the chance to see what else your dad have among the 27 boxes. Somewhere in the boxes is calling me by my name! Be interested to know if there is something I am looking for. :wishluck:

Some of us here - boardies - are going to Calgary Comic expo this April month. Maybe that might be your time to ask us for help with your dad's collection?

Given your father's age and location (Calgary), you might want to check to see if he has any Canadian Whites (which were wartime books produced between 1941-46 and contained original Canadian content). Most of these books aren't worth huge sums of money, but they are very scarce and are slowly starting to get the recognition they deserve.

Ideally I would like some high level help identifying which comics may be the best to have graded.

Based on your list of ASMs, I'd suggest definitely grading the 15 and 129 and possibly the 121 and 299. Those will likely be the ones where you cover your grading fees and make some profit (especially the 129 at 9.2).

HOWEVER, it might be worth doing a small test submission to see how your Dad's grades compare to CGC's. If he's a really tight grader, then some of those other silver age Spideys could be worthwhile getting graded.

Good point.

wow you were not kidding.... about the "dreck" part or the previous mention about how he bought multiple copies... did he have a wholesaler contact or was he buying them off the newsstand? You have 12 runs of the first 12 issues of The 'Nam. Wow.

For the dreck runs, I can tell you that complete runs (or long runs say 20-30 issues) they sell relatively well on ebay for people looking for stuff to read and/or bind. I know I put together a Nam run about 10 years ago for that reason.

Wow that's a lot of Nam.

I cant imagine a dealer wanting to take on that type of duplicitous inventory, unless he's thinking about bundles (ie bundle Nam 1-12 sell for $5)

Well, I know of one person who'd want to buy a set of 'Nam for cheap. He has been looking for a set to read the stories. But yeah... That is a lot of sets! I doubt any dealer would take in that many sets like this one.

This is starting to feel like spam to me. I don't think the OP started this as a sales thread, but that's what it's turning into. If the majority of board members starting posting huge lists of books in CG that were going to hit the market shortly thereafter, they'd get pulled faster than OldGuy could say "Go fist yourself!"

Wow, what a "chum fest" Sound like some one has more interest in helping himself more than "dad"... (not that there is anything wrong with that)...

I still see this thread as the OP genuinely asking for opinions. I'm more interested in discussing what's in those boxes and where it came from than seeing another tv speculation thread.

I agree... I'm finding the detailed look into this sort of collection oddly engaging, and the OP has been genuinely seeking information without straying into salesmanship.

I'm interested in seeing more.

+1

in the history of the world, no one has ever opened a sales pitch with "I've got 7 copies of the first 12 issues of 'Nam"
