appreciate your opinion- how much does centering and wrap affect value?

90 posts in this topic

Hi I am trying to market price a comic,

what % bump would you value for this, I think great centering.

X-Men 101 9.8

Cover

over another while nice, has more of a white border slightly uneven?

ebay example

None, 5% more for even versus askew?, 10% for even and no white showing?

love to get your opinion. Let me know if you think if the registration is good, great or best?

thanks,

Eric

What does the registration have to do with value? (shrug)

Looks like a normal 9.8 to me.

As far as a miswrap, they're not really taken into account as far as market prices go. Either the buyer likes it or not...usually no premium if it doesn't have a miswrap.

You are confusing Centering for Registration.

Are you confusing Centering with Registration?

Could someone define exactly what registration is for me, I've never been sure

Registration is lining up all elements of the art so the colors are inside the drawings and everything is in the right place.

Three registration marks will line up a 2 dimensional surface. Registration marks are those circles with a cross inside you see on artwork.

Comics are printed in 4 colors: yellow, magenta (aka red), cyan (aka blue) and black. So there are four separate plates that have to line up with each other. If they do not line up the colors start sticking out the edges of the art and is called "out of register". In the example below the colors are not aligned with each other. (had to use an attachment as photosucket is in maintenance mode.)

Ahhh, ok, I understand now, thank you

As others have said, "centering" is the word you're looking for, and for me, virtually nothing, unless it's an obvious extremity.

If two copies are side by said, and they're the same price, I go for the better centering.

If the non-centered one is cheaper...even $5 cheaper...that's what I go with.

Examples of comics whose colors are out of registration: opinion

I also corrected the spelling error in the title. :shy:

They look great through my glasses.

When I was living in Boston I would hit New Hampshire flea markets. Some guy had a Realart FRANKENSTEIN/BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN poster that was so out of register he was trying to sell it as a 3D piece. Naturally he refused to believe me when I told him.

Back in the dinosaur days , the black stripe on most comics should have fallen

directly down the spine. That was very important to some of us. Color registration

on the inside pages was very important. I've had quite a few of the Whiz title that

were very wonky, almost 3d ish. Glad I always collected the mid and lower grades.

Even as OCD as I am these days....

You can always price your books at a premium when nicely presenting

Remember buy the book not the number.

With that said. A 9.8 has a pretty hefty premium and I think asking more is the wrong question...

How much below or lower would you pay for bad qp

I'm not really a big fan of miswraps (the white border/uneven)... If its small, subtle and even I don't mind too much. But if it's really uneven or extreme then I won't buy the book.

It's tough to qualify with a % increase/decrease however.

I would prefer/value the nice centering book more but that is my personal preference. There is no formula like 5%/10% . I hate books that have a huge white border with off centering. Supposely, does not affect the grade but to me it is ugly to look at and does not present well. That is a big expensive book so you have to decide your price range/value with so many factors (numbers, hot, page quality, centering, etc) affecting the value. Sometimes, I keep waiting for the perfect centering book and it never shows up. I know the X-Men 101 has a lot of books with the centering being off.
