PHANTASM REMASTERED & RAVAGER (10/7/16)

J.J.Abrams is rejuvenating another 70's franchise

A longtime fan of the franchise, young J.J. saw the film Phantasm as a child and it stuck with him. So much so that the name of the character "Captain Phasma" was created as a direct tribute to the horror flick. (Phasma's helmet reminded Abrams of the iconic chrome, brain drilling spheres the film had become famous for).

While doing "Felicity", Abrams called Phantasm's writer/director/photographer/editor/co-producer Don Coscarelli because he wanted to show Phantasm at his production company "Bad Robot". Coscarelli informed Abrams that the original prints were in bad shape. This prompted Abrams to offer an opportunity for a meticulous 4k restoration with a new 5.1 audio soundtrack, an offer Coscarelli could not and did not refuse.

Phantasm: Remastered will screen in select cinemas on September 24th. This will preced the October 7th release of Phantasm: Ravanger as the 5th and final instalment in the series bringing closure to a franchise just shy of 40 years old.

The Tall Man scared the heck out of me as a kid.

Phantasm: Ravager: The Tall Man is back in exclusive trailer

Like a lethal, flying silver sphere, the Phantasm horror franchise is returning this year to drill its way back into the collective consciousness. On Oct. 4, a restored version of writer-director Don Coscarelli’s nightmarish 1979 film Phantasm — now titled Phantasm: Remastered — and the new, fifth film in the franchise, called Phantasm: Ravager, will be available to watch via digital HD and VOD before the pair zoom their way into theaters Oct. 7. And the newly released trailer for the latter, premiering exclusively here, would seem to have pretty much everything a Phantasm fan could want from what Coscarelli has said will be the last entry in the franchise. Certainly, it has no shortage of balls.

Phantasm: Ravager is directed by David Hartman, co-written by Hartman and Coscarelli, and executive-produced by Brad Baruh. The film will premiere Sept. 25 at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.

It's tough to beat a black 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda with a pistol grip four speed, no matter what movie it's in! That it happens to be in one of the best horror movies of all time is icing on the cake. Phantasm ranks right up there with the original Halloween!
