Suspicious selling of undisclosed resto on ebay

There is a seller with some higher grade golden age currently on ebay that has a book up with undisclosed resto

This book

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Suspense-Detective-1-1952-Evans-Baily-c-a-VF-WOW-FREE-SHIPPING-ORDERS-99-/201654375763?hash=item2ef3899553:g:DBcAAOSwRGlXp0wL

is clearly this book, but after a top trim and color touch, not mentioned in the above listing.

The seller smitjcs.4869 appears to do some press and push the grade selling, which is legitimate as far as it goes, as undisclosed pressing is generally accepted, and grade is an opinion, but the clearly doctored book above would make me suspicious of other listings.

I messaged the seller asking about trimming and CT, this was the reply:

New message from: smitjcs.4869 (399Turquoise Star)

Hi!

Thanks for your message and interest!

And no, there is no trimming or color touch on this comic.

We always stand by our word. That's why we have our return and refund policy to guarantee complete satisfaction.

Hope that helps.

Kathleen and Jonathan

You think there's any chance it's legit?

Hopefully they will give up in this endeavor, at least with GA books. After factoring in fees and cross border shipping on the purchase they made little if any money selling it for $23 more.

I checked out a few other books they had listed in which I was able to find the previous sale, and in all three cases the profit would have been more than wiped out by ebay and paypal fees.

They seem to deal mostly in SA, relying on loose grading for a profit, though checking through their feedback a couple blue and black cover books look like they may have had work, but judging from a scan can be tricky.

Looks like they relisted with a much heftier price tag

This morning's sale got cancelled fast.

I knew who the buyer was (not me), and immediately made him aware of this thread. He contacted the sellers and requested a refund. They complied quickly. Kudos to everyone that brought this to light :applause:

Wow Mitch, just a little harsh "the sum of the collecting earth"? (pretty sure the word you were looking for was "scum"). Sadly, a lot of us little "scum" aren't wealthy doctors and lawyers and can't necessarily afford to swim in the "big pool" all the time.

You are completely right though about buying high dollar books. If you want to swim in the big pool better wear your rubbers and buy those books entoumbed.

A fool and his money...

Mitch is both right AND wrong. Ebay has its share of hucksters, but fortunately, for buyers (to the chagrin of honest sellers) it's a cinch to get refunds on eBay for almost any reason. Really, to me it's no different than being at a con, getting caught up in purchases here and there, then you arrive home and find color touch etc. It happens and with eBay at least there is an easy recourse. Depending on from whom at the con you get a "bad" book, a refund/exchange may not be as easy.

The key of course is knowing what to look for, to prevent getting stuck. It's a learning curve, was for me, same for anyone. A good rule of thumb, if buying above a certain comfort level (differs for everyone) -- just get a book in a first-tier slab. And if you're into raw books, no worries, you can always liberate it. :)

Robotman, I find your collection to be easily big-pool worthy. Mitch's too, thinking back to when he showed off some of his beautiful art pieces. :)
