Heh, funny story! Love that how that slipped into print and went on for 36 years. That shows how crafty whoever did the piece in Joe's artwork. Grines must had been steamed as he realized how he missed it by inspection before printing. Great prank. 

Now I had to wonder how many other comics with "pranks" had escaped the inspection of editors over the GA/SA/BA eras? So far I am aware of two comic books now.

It's clearly a classical Greek curtain pattern with an homage to the god Priapus.
