Bob's Comic Books

Today, I drove to Birmingham, Alabama, for work. I did the perfunctory search for local comic stores, and I found Bob comic shop just outside Birmingham, Alabama. The pictures on Google were promising. The outside looked rundown, and it seemed like this place actually had back issues.

I found the store, and sure enough there were bars on the doors and it was in what barely could pass for a dilapidated strip mall. But once inside, all the walls had comics on them, and there were boxes of back issues and even a few slabs. The owner, Bob, have been in business for about 20 years. He was clearly a dedicated collector himself and someone devoted to what he'd mitted was a bit of an anachronism: a store built for filling out runs. I found some good stuff, and a lot more that would have been fun to pick though if I had more time and more money. But here is what I did find.

The store definitely looked old school, with the wall books and the rows of long boxes.  Out of the two in my city one is still in that vein while the other has hardly any back issues and is 75% action figures with the other 25% being TPB's.

My LCS does a lot of business apparently with Star Wars and GI Joe action figures. Whatever keeps them going works for me.

My LCSs are 170 miles west, 180 miles north or 235 miles south.

I pretty much don't even try to go to comic shops anymore.  Although I do try to stop in at Hooker's Comics and Cards and visit Dennis (TheShadowKnows) when I go through Eugene (That's 250 miles)

I'm going back today. I've got about 2 more hours at this conference, and then I'm off for comics. Today is payday, not good, not good at all.

So this guy bought a large collection from someone who spent five years in the late eighties taking stacks of comics to shows for signatures. LOTS of signed comics. I got a few as seen below.

There's a store in Portland Oregon like that.  Acmes??? It's super cool with back issues. Being a gas mask tho. Owner smokes like a chimney.

I love that Wonder woman cover, it's strange that some great covers are neglected in favour of the keys. Personally I just love the art more than the personalities, great collection of books you bought enjoy.

Does that mean he/you got some Frank Frazetta sig's??

The only one I noticed that was on the cover was JR senior....so hopefully most of them are on the first page or something.....
